About Melissa Bernstein and Mark Johnson

Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein are the Executive Producers behind two of the most talked about TV shows today–Breaking Bad and Rectify; both of which were shot in Georgia. Breaking Bad has been nominated for, and won, Emmy and other awards; Rectify, just released in 2013, is already following suit with a TCA Award nomination under its belt already. Clearly, the pair knows how to make good TV…and they’re sure to see repeat success with their third show, also shooting in Georgia: Halt & Catch Fire. While certainly notable for his television credits, Johnson is also the Producer / Executive Producer behind several unforgettable movies. The short list of his most memorable films include: Rain Man, The Notebook, Bugsy, Donnie Brasco, My Sister’s Keeper, What Lies Beneath, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe, and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Fulton Country to cut funding for the arts

Below is a letter from the Fulton County Arts Council that talent and industry professionals may find interesting. Please feel free to share.

As you may have recently read in last Sunday’s AJC, Fulton County is in a dire financial situation, looking at a possible $115m deficit.  I am reaching out to you to make you aware that as a part of a proposed resolution to this deficit, the current Interim County Manager has proposed a 100% cut to the Department of Arts and Culture.  Long story short…We need your help!  As someone who is either in the arts or has a strong appreciation for what art and culture means for this community, our Fulton County Commissioners MUST hear from you!

Over the past five years our budget has been cut an average of 14-20% annually, and since 2001 has been cut over one million dollars. Though these were difficult for the Arts in Fulton County, the cuts were proportionately aligned with all other departments within the County budget.  At this juncture, however, a 100% cut to the Department of Arts and Culture is in the County Manager’s top three recommendations!

Our plea to you, as someone who is connected to arts and culture in this community, is for you, your staff, board, attendees and friends to IMMEDIATELY let your Commissioner know of their concern.  To let our voices be heard, we ask everyone who wants this to continue to be a healthy cultural community to do one or all of the following:

1)      Call your Commissioner and simply state that you are very concerned and not in favor of there being any cuts in the Dept. of Arts and Culture;

Note:  Phone numbers are below

2)       Send an email to your Commissioner stating that art and culture is an important part of the quality of life for those of us who live, work and play in Fulton County and that you urge them not to support the County Manager’s recommendation to cut the budget for the Dept. of Arts and Culture;

Note:  Email Addresses of Commissioners are below:

District 1 (At Large)     Chairman John Eaves
Email: john.eaves@fultoncountyga.gov
404-612-8206

District 2 (At Large)  Commissioner Robb Pitts
Email: robb.pitts@fultoncountyga.gov
404-612-8210

District 3  Commissioner Liz Hausmann
Email: liz.hausmann@fultoncountyga.gov
404-612-8213

District 4  Commissioner Tom Lowe
Email: tom.lowe@fultoncountyga.gov
404-612-8218

District 5   Commissioner Emma Darnell
Email: emma.darnell@fultoncountyga.gov
404-612-8222

District 6    Commissioner Joan Garner
Email: joan.garner@fultoncountyga.gov
404-612-8226

District 7   Commissioner William “Bill” Edwards
Email: commissioner.edwards@fultoncountyga.gov
404-612-8230

3)      Attend the Board of Commissioners meeting (Wednesday, August 21st at 10:00AM) where this issue will be discussed and voice your concern during the public comment section. The meeting will be held at the Fulton County Govt. Complex, 141 Pryor Street, Atlanta, Georgia.  At this called meeting, they are scheduled to introduce the recent recommendations to the full Board.  Your presence is critical and extremely necessary to ensure we maintain a healthy Arts environment throughout Fulton County.

Note:  If you are an arts organization, please be prepared to share the impact of your organization (i.e. number of employees, number of attendees…especially if you can break those numbers down to number of seniors, youth/children, etc.)

We are encouraging all in attendance to wear green so our presence can be easily recognized by the BOC.

The Department of Arts and Culture, as well as the Fulton County Arts Council thanks you in advance.  This will be our only chance to communicate to the Commissioners the importance of Arts and Culture in our surrounding communities.

Our thanks, in advance, for all you have and will continue to contribute to  Arts and Culture.  Please ACT TODAY to help stop this action by the Commission and allow Fulton County’s quality of life for families, children, seniors and artists remain alive and vibrant!

Warm regards,

The Fulton County Arts Council

Breaking down the audition process by focusing on the scene is vital.

This workshop is about working scripts, knowing what questions to ask, helping the actor find out who they are and about being able to understand their character.

We will be spending time working Film and Television scripts while including the element of improv allowing the actor exploration beyond the words on the page.

The purpose of the workshop is to build confidence in making choices and realizing that will come with stepping away from what feels safe and relying on one’s individual unique strengths.

Spend the day with Regina Moore identifying what makes you unique as an actor.

Haber Film/TV Audition Intensive
Taught by Della Cole

This Intensive course is designed for trained actors who have some audition experience.

As professional actors, we often audition and work on projects that don’t necessarily challenge the full spectrum of our talents. You may be comfortable with industrials, commercials, and voice-over but fall apart when you audition for a film. With the increase of film and television coming to Georgia, now more than ever, Atlanta talent needs to be ready for Hollywood auditions.

In this Intensive, using the “Haber Audition Technique”, actors work with film and television scripts, learning how to nail the audition in a limited amount of time. The focus is on the nuts and bolts of breaking down a scene, including relationship, intention, history, opening and closing beats, core and masking. Using the skills you learn will greatly improve your audition skills. This valuable cold-reading technique works.

AGENT VISIT!

August 24th

Our 4-month Summer session will have its Grand Finale Saturday, August 24th, when the parents will join us in the Theatre from 10am – noon for the kids and from 1-3pm for the teens to view the young actors performing improv and scenes live onstage, as well as watching their taped scenes or monologues on the widescreen!

Rick Estimond of Hot Shot Kids/Teens will be there to watch our kids and answer questions for them and their parents.

Kitty Bundy of Presence Models & Talent will be giving critique and feedback to our teens.

We are very proud of these students and know you’ll want to be there to watch your child or teen, and to listen to the agent’s feedback.  Don’t miss it!

Please Note: Because this is a live performance, we ask that you leave small children at home if possible.

BUSINESS OF ACTING SEMINAR

Mark your calendar!

We will have a “Business of Acting Seminar” for parents during regular class hours Saturday, July 13 covering headshots, resume’s, agents, auditions, and more.  You’ll be given materials to take home with you.

Bob Harter or Della Cole will be in the lobby explaining these subjects and answering your questions about how to best support your child or teen in their pursuit of an acting career, if that is their goal.  Even if you or your child or teen are not sure at this point in their training, this is valuable info just in case they decide later to seek representation and begin auditioning.

SURVEY 4 U

You will soon be receiving a short survey from us.  Please take a minute to respond.  Your feedback has always helped us improve our classes.

Share with the subscribers to our Newsletter how your training at yourACT has benefitted you as a parent, and what it has done for your child or teen.

What auditions, acting gigs, insights and experiences have you gained that you can share to encourage and enlighten others?

yourACT actors are having an impact on the Atlanta entertainment & advertising industries and the community.  Thanks for your participation.

KIDS VOICE-OVER WORKSHOP

Taught by Debra Nelson

4th to 8th Graders

1-3pm Saturdays

August 3, 10, 17, 24

$175

About Debra

Debra Nelson is a veteran talent with over 25 years of experience on camera, on stage and in the recording studio.  Publix, Coca Cola, IBM, the Georgia Lottery, Mayfield Ice Cream, Ford Motor Company, AT&T and Nationwide Insurance are just a few of the companies that make hers the voice of choice for their commercials. In addition to commercials, she lends her voice to narration projects, promos, prompts and books on tape.

Behind the scenes, Debra has served locally as member-at-large of the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists as well as President and National Board Member of the Screen Actors Guild representing the Georgia Branch. Currently she serves on the National Board of the now merged SAG-AFTRA entertainment union representing the Atlanta Local.

PRIVATE VOICE-OVER INSTRUCTION

With Della Cole

Can’t do a class or prefer to work individually?

Della coaches privately for VO whether it’s  coaching to learn the technique of delivery or creating your own personal demo. Coaching for VO training is $60 an hour. Coaching and recording your demo is $75/hour plus a one time fee of $100 for the audio engineer to mix the tracks with sound effects and music.  The time needed varies depending on the student’s ability and motivation.

We get a lot of referrals and inquiries from agents about children and teens for voice-over demos.  This can be a great thing for them to add to their resume’.  It’s not easy, but it can be a lot of fun.

If you are interested in booking time for voice-over instruction with Della, call 11:30a – 3:30p Mon – Thurs.  404-499-9996.
