Q:Aside from good acting, right looks, etc. is there anything that ‘pops’ for you in an audition? Something you can identify that makes one person stand out over another? -Lisa B.
A: I think it’s difficult to set aside performance and look but I would say that what ultimately pops in terms of which actor books the job is that actor’s specific and somewhat intangible connection to the material, which is generally what we mean by timing. And that’s beyond your control! I can tell you that one thing I find very apparent when an actor comes in to audition is his or her level of familiarity with the show. That certainly pops for me because it means an appreciation of the tone and the qualities of the regular cast.
