Pogo’s “Goat 4 Sale”

Will Pogo’s Doritos ad, Goat 4 Sale, air during the Super Bowl on Sunday?

We’ve been asked this a lot lately. The short answer is: we’re not sure! We’ll find out with the rest of you by watching the game.

Now, if it does air, we’ll have the opportunity to be ranked in the USA Today Ad Meter. For the first time, USA Today is allowing anyone to sign up to be an Ad Meter panelist, as long as you pre-register online before the end of the day this Friday. If you’d like to participate, take 45 seconds to register for the Ad Meter now.

Both during AND after the game Sunday (up until midnight ET), you can join us in rating the Super Bowl ads by logging on to the Ad Meter site. If our spot does make it to the air, we have a feeling we’ll be voting for it, although we may be slightly biased.

Having said all that, whether you voted for us during the competition once, twice, every day or simply spread the word, we can’t thank you all enough for your support, regardless of what happens Sunday.

“Act Without Acting”

“Act without Acting” in 2013!

Resolve to Act without Acting

Last month I took a trip to Europe to work with a new student who’d never acted before, but is to be the main character in an American TV series about him.  The series is in the style of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” or “Entourage”.   Not “reality,” but based on real characters and real situations.  I think I was there not only to get him ready, but also, though it was unstated, to see if he could actually do it.  It was a crash course; we worked together for eight days straight for as long as it was fun each day and that was anywhere from two to four hours.

For me, there was a lot that’s interesting about this.  One, I had to actually go through all the exercises with him (as it was often just the two of us working) and that gave me a fresh perspective on them.  I actually experienced, again, what works so well for me and I experienced how powerful the exercises are in connecting me to my natural instincts, getting me out of my head, and giving me the freedom that allows for a performance that is quirky, interesting, and alive.

Second, I watched a fledgling actor begin to give professional performances over the period of eight days.  When we started he was unconnected, perhaps talented (hard to say at that point) and seemed to be just reading.  By the end of eight days, I could have cut the performances he gave after only about 15 or 20 minutes of prep (especially the outrageous comedy) into a movie or TV show and he would be lauded.

The technique and exercises work fast, but, of course that doesn’t mean he can go off and just do it all by himself now.  Well, maybe he can, but it’s a long shot.  To keep growing, he’ll have to keep working at it — and, as always with me, having fun.  But I found out fast what everyone wanted to know, is he talented enough to carry a TV series?  And the answer was, yes.

I had him prep a dramatic movie script using the technique and at the end of our time together, we watched a DVD of the real movie.  A very talented actor played the part that I’d given my fledgling to work on, and it was fascinating to note that he held his own against the seasoned young actor who played the part in the movie – and in a couple of the scenes he went even deeper than this talented actor without “Acting”.

I think what happened is that he learned to act without ever trying too hard (which is the curse of all acting) so in “studying his craft” with me, he cut through many levels of being unsuccessful and went straight to a level of connecting, being real, being in the moment and being alive.  It takes a commitment to keep this happening in one’s work, but it’s well worth it.

The results are beautiful.

Actors Insite newsletter

Thanks to all that sent in questions for John!  We hope that you find his answers insightful and useful…

Q:  Aside from good acting, right looks, etc. is there anything that ‘pops’ for you in an audition?   Something you can identify that makes one person stand out over another?   -Lisa B.

A:  I think it’s difficult to set aside performance and look but I would say that what ultimately pops in terms of which actor books the job is that actor’s specific and somewhat intangible connection to the material, which is generally what we mean by timing.  And that’s beyond your control!  I can tell you that one thing I find very apparent when an actor comes in to audition is his or her level of familiarity with the show.  That certainly pops for me because it means an appreciation of the tone and the qualities of the regular cast.

Audiences are Loving Swell Party!
“So enjoyed this new play by Topher Payne. All the right people were at the party … perfectly cast!” ~ Sherrill Redovian

“Loved loved loved “Swell Party.” I took a friend visiting from NYC and he gave it a rave; ‘this is better than anything I’ve seen on Off-Broadway.’ We laughed and cried.” ~ Karen Dohm

“”Swell Party” is charming, funny, lively and winningly old-fashioned. It’s a play that deserves to be a hit, and I think audiences will enjoy what’s being served here: it’s expertly and energetically done.” ~ Andrew Alexander, ArtsATL Review

SWELL PARTY is recommended by the Suzi Bass Awards!

Collections for Open Hand

For a second year, Georgia Ensemble Theatre is proud to join with the Atlanta members of Actors’ Equity Association to raise money for Open Hand Atlanta. Since 1988, Open Hand has prepared and delivered over 20 million healthy meals to homebound and chronically ill Atlanta-area residents, and provided nutritional education to help families live healthier lives – over five thousand meals a day. We’ll be collecting for OpenHand during the run of Swell Party, helping them continue their good work here at home. Every dollar helps. Atlanta Cares/Equity Fights Hunger.

About Swell Party

Tobacco heir Smith Reynolds returns from a New York vacation to his North Carolina estate with

Weston Manders and Jo Howarth in Swell Party.

a surprise souvenir: a wife. The new Mrs. Reynolds is a popular jazz singer, a dozen years older than Smith, and arrives with a certifiably insane acting coach. A wedding party is flat-out ruined when the groom turns up dead. As the guests gather to reconstruct the evening’s events and try to solve the mystery, it becomes clear that for Southerners, the truth isn’t nearly as important as a good story.

Popular Atlanta playwright Topher Payne returns to us on the heels of his widely embraced 2011 GET hit Tokens of Affection with this world premiere.

Directed by Shannon Eubanks; Featuring Scott DePoy, Kate Donatio, Suehyla El-Attar, Jo Howarth, Tess Malis Kincaid, Tony Larkin, and Weston Manders.

Ryan directed this show, so if you see anything that looks weird, Ryan did that.  If you hear anything that sounds weird, Ryan told the actors to say it like that. And if you eat something that tastes weird, Ryan probably cooked it.  But don’t worry, he isn’t allowed to cook at Agatha’s anymore.

    Jamie Moore

Jamie is SO HAPPY to be back at Agatha’s.  Why?  Well not only because he is starring in this show, but because he WROTE this show with fellow first timer John Babcock.  That’s right!  Jamie knows how to write!  And sometimes, he can form sentences.  Is there any end to his talents??!?!  The answer to that question is yes.   But not in this show.  Come see Jamie perform the words that he wrote especially for himself.  And then see if he forgets any of them. That would be ironic.  Which is a word that Jamie knows the definition of, now that he’s a writer.

        Amber Chaney

Amber is back at Agatha’s for her second straight show.  Which means she has practically lived at Agatha’s for the past 4 months.  Literally.  She sleeps on the kitchen floor at night, so if you see her with food stuck on her costume, that’s not a choice, that’s a lifetyle.  Come on down to Amber’s new home and try out the chairs in the dining room. Or as she calls it, her laundry room.  Don’t ask.

       Randy Havens

Randy is back at Agatha’s after a stint trekking throught the Peruvian jungle.  Seriously.  He did that over the holidays.  And you thought hanging out with your mother-in-law was hard.  He’s happy to be back  at Agatha’s and performing in Good Morning Murder!  Actually, he just happy to be back where there’s running water.

                Tara Ochs

Tara was sailing around the globe for the better part of last year, so she missed  a lot of important things, like the last Twilight movie. Don’t tell her how it ends, but she’s sure hoping that someone ends up with a stake thru the heart.  She’s glad to be back at Agatha’s and playing the always in-trouble actress Lindsay Lowland.  For preperation, she caused four car wrecks, slapped a bunch of people with cameras, and stayed awake for 48 hours before coming to work.  Come see her try to make it through the show without collapsing.

Next week, the Alliance kicks off 2013 with the Tony Award-nominated Good People. It’s about, well, good people. Real people. And it’s about fate, the kind of fate that has two people walk into the same Bingo hall and one gets the good cards and the other gets [expletive deleted] cards. The kind of fate that makes you wonder if that one person always gets the good cards somehow. Or maybe it’s just that the other person seems to always get the [expletive deleted] cards.

Who are our Good People? The cast features several Atlanta faces, including Andrew Benator and Brenda Bynum (both played in August: Osage County); Kristen Ariza (a graduate of the Alliance’s Acting Internship Program); and Lala Cochran. Joining them are Kate Buddeke and Thomas Vincent Kelly as Margaret and Mike, two Southie natives that ended up being dealt much different cards. And our own Susan V. Booth directs.

The Acting Camp – Pilot Season Jump Start

The Acting Camp
TAC Spotlight: Master Coaches

Steven Memel & John D’Aquino

Steven Memel:

Steven Memel is a celebrity vocal and performing coach, as well as an award-winning actor and director.  His client list is out of this world!  Some of the most talented and successful people in the entertainment industry have had the opportunity to work with Steven.  He is the creator of and the energy behind “The Science Of Switching On”, a unique and impactful system that enables him to achieve rapid and dramatic results with all performers.

Steven’s celebrity client list includes names like Sara Bareilles, Jesse McCartney, Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Taryn Manning, Isabella Rossellini and Adam Levine from Maroon 5. Here’s what Adam had to say about working with Steven:

“I worked with [Steven] long before anyone had heard of Maroon 5. But I didn’t know how good he was until recently. Since we’ve had a #1 hit, we’ve been touring nonstop, and that schedule really takes a toll on your body. Anyone that knows our music knows the extremes of range I have to deal with, so my voice must be in top condition to make it through. He gave me the tools I need to keep it together in a high-stakes environment.” -Adam Levine, Maroon 5.

Steven is one of the best and The Acting Camp is so thrilled to have him as one of our coaches at the 2013 Pilot Season Jump Start Camp!

http://vimeo.com/32948588

John D’Aquino:

John D’Aquino (Cory in the House, Shake it Up, CSI, Hannah Montana, Seinfeld) is a superb actor and teacher.   It’s no secret he loves acting, but his true passion is teaching.  John was very much inspired by his teacher, mentor, and friend, Charles Nelson Riley, who taught him the importance of helping actors find their voice.

Currently, John stays busy at his studio in Burbank.  There, he teaches classes, holds private audition coaching, as well as video taping sessions.  But that’s not all!  John also holds local seminars, workshops, and summer camps so that actors can further their careers.

One of the greatest aspects of John is his unbound intention to help young actors not only become better performers, but better people. Here’s an excerpt from one of John’s recent newsletters, which so eliquently expresses this mentality:

“As educators and actors ourselves, we know performers are a different breed, and to help young actors, we must encourage them to feel, to risk and to strive tirelessly in their quest for their dreams. But we also know that we are preparing them for a greater game of life, and we must help them be prepared to walk into any room, (in show biz or any other ‘biz’) and stand tall, look a person in the eyes, shake a hand firmly and say, ‘I know I can make a significant contribution, I am fully prepared and I’m willing to outwork the competition.’”

The Acting Camp can’t wait to have John D’Aquino at the 2013 Pilot Season Jump Start Camp!!

GA Ensemble newsletter

Georgia Ensemble Theatre Thank You For Your Support!
Don’t miss your last chance to make a tax-deductible donation to your favorite theatre company in 2012!
(Named Atlanta Magazine’s “Best Suburban Drama” for 2012!)

Dear (Contact First Name),

Thank you for bringing us to this, our amazing Emerald Anniversary!

It’s been an incredible 20 years since Georgia Ensemble Theatre and Conservatory opened its doors. Here’s to 20 more years of excellence! As we say goodbye to 2012, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you, our valued patrons, for your unwavering support and generosity throughout the years. We have made great strides this past year, with support from several significant foundations, the newly minted Emerald Club, as well as new corporate sponsors. All of us at the Georgia Ensemble Theatre are indelibly grateful for your dedication to the only professional theatre company in North Fulton, helping to make our mission a success. The cultural stability of our community is greatly enriched because of your support.

Wendy Melkonian in “Becky’s New Car.”

As we look back on 2012, we remember ringing in the New Year with the hilarious new play Becky’s New Car; then we laughed through the rest of winter with The Foreigner; we honored the late great Johnny Cash with the roaring musical hit Ring of Fire. Our Emerald Anniversary Season began in September with the classic Kaufman and Hart comedy The Man Who Came To Dinner; our Theatre for Youth tours of Aesop’s Fables and Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach brought delight to children around metro Atlanta; and to date we have performed the powerful multi-media Holocaust drama And Then They Came For Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank for over 300,000 students and teachers. And finally, we closed 2012 with a bang by bringing back the wildly popular A Taffeta Christmas. We hope you enjoyed these productions as much as we enjoyed bringing them to you.

The Cast of “Ring of Fire.”

Our outreach programs have brought us even closer to the community, such as the recent free showing of James and the Giant Peach at Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. Programs like this lend our mission greater strength and build upon our cultural legacy. As the long term health of our organization is established, we have a renewed vigor to captivate the current generation of theatre-goers and nurture future generations. We fulfill this mission through the selfless ensemble collaboration of our artists, audiences, and students.

2012 brought a great amount of stability to our Theatre. This stability has allotted us the resources to develop a long-range plan that will expand all of our programming. This will lay the foundation for us to become an even larger and more successful theatre. The future is bright, and we owe you, our cherished supporters, for this shining horizon.

None of this would be possible without direct support from the community. We deliberately include you, our audience, in our mission, because you complete the circle of ensemble ownership in this theatre. We graciously ask that you please consider a gift to the Georgia Ensemble Theatre and Conservatory, for the success we have achieved must be maintained. The greater community support we have, the more leverage we have when approaching sponsors. You can make a one-time donation, or you can be part of the ongoing energy of success and become one of our Sustaining Donors. Your contribution will include you in our Hello, Dolly! Donor Celebration in April, which gets you into the party and the show for free!

On behalf of the entire Georgia Ensemble Theatre community, we wish you, your friends, and family a happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you in 2013 and over the next 20 years.

(For your convenience, you may donate online by clicking the link on our donor page, or by calling us at 770-641-1260, or by sending your donation to our offices at P.O. Box 607, Roswell, GA  30077-0607.)

Swell Party opening night

You’re Invited!

A world premiere commissioned by

Georgia Ensemble Theatre!

The Cast of Swell Party. Photo by R. Todd Fleeman.
Tobacco heir Smith Reynolds returns from a New York vacation to his North Carolina estate with a surprise souvenir: a wife. The new Mrs. Reynolds is a popular jazz singer, a dozen years older than Smith, and arrives with a certifiably insane acting coach. A wedding party is flat-out ruined when the groom turns up dead. As the guests gather to reconstruct the evening’s events and try to solve the mystery, it becomes clear that for Southerners, the truth isn’t nearly as important as a good story.Popular Atlanta playwright Topher Payne returns to us on the heels of his widely embraced 2011 GET hit Tokens of Affection with this world premiere.
