Changes to the 8/6 & 8/7 Chez Group Workshop

We are announcing a slight change of plan for our upcoming workshop weekend with Shay Griffin and Mari Lyn Henry August 6th and 7th.

Shay asked that I encourage each of you to invite any of your talent who you feel might benefit from this weekend workshop event.  It will be an excellent opportunity for her to get to meet with them personally.

After Shay’s recent seminar with Alpha Tyler, in which participants were encouraged to ask any questions they may have regarding the casting process, we realized there was not enough time in the day to get to all of the answers.

With the weekend’s format that we have structured for Mari Lyn Henry’s visit to Atlanta August 6th and 7th, participants of the weekend workshop will have the opportunity to visit with Shay when she is not observing and participating with Mari Lyn.  They are encouraged to ask any questions regarding the casting process that they may have, whether these questions relate to the actor individually, or are general in nature.

Because Shay will be holding this open forum discussion simultaneously with Mari Lyn Henry’s HOW TO BE A WORKING ACTOR workshop, we are changing the workshop location so that the two rooms will be situated next door to one another.  This move will facilitate everyone’s being able to rotate more conveniently in small groups between the two sessions throughout the course of the weekend.

As a reminder, the workshop details, including the new address, are as follows.

The Chez Group is excited to announce a two-day workshop weekend with Shay Griffin and Mari Lyn Henry, who will be coming to Atlanta to join Shay, the weekend of August 6th and 7th.

Mari Lyn will conduct her highly acclaimed workshop, Getting Your Act Together!, based on her best selling book, HOW TO BE A WORKING ACTOR, now in its fifth edition and more commonly referred to by actors and industry professionals as “The Bible of the Biz.”

To read more of Mari Lyn’s career highlights, please follow this link, http://www.chezgroup.com/mlhenry.html .

The weekend’s agenda will include image enhancement, scene study, and audition technique…both on and off camera. Each participant will receive individual analysis from Mari Lyn regarding all aspects of presentation.  A detailed schedule of events can be found on the training page of our website at http://www.chezgroup.com/training.html .

Shay Griffin will be on hand throughout the weekend to answer more of your talent’s questions about the casting process.  We have found that there is a huge demand for time devoted specifically to questions and concerns regarding auditions…and nobody is better equipped and more qualified to address the subject than casting director, Shay Griffin.

While Mari Lyn works with your talent on creating their perfect image for an audition, Shay continues the process through a Q & A session that runs in conjunction over the course of this two-day workshop.

After spending the weekend with Shay and Mari Lyn, your talent will have the necessary tools it takes to be working actors.

To purchase a copy of Mari Lyn’s book, HOW TO BE A WORKING ACTOR, please follow this link to Amazon.com, http://www.amazon.com/How-Working-Actor-5th-Television/dp/0823088952/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1309226760&sr=1-1

Casting director Shay Griffin is quoted on pages 238-239 in the chapter devoted to regional markets, wherein Atlanta is designated as a “unique regional market” for the acting industry.

The minimum age requirement to attend this workshop is 15 years of age.

The hours of the workshop weekend will be Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM…all participants will attend both days…!

The new workshop location is the Residence Inn by Marriott Atlanta/Buckhead at 2960 Piedmont Road, NE, Atlanta, GA 30305.  The hotel’s phone number is 404-239-0677.  If anyone should need to book a guest room, a $99 rate per night has been extended to all of our Chez Group actors.  Please be sure the room is booked through the front desk to receive this special rate.

The cost of this two-day workshop is $225.

There is a PayPal button on the training page of the website.  To register, please follow this link, http://www.chezgroup.com/training.html.

from the Atlanta Film Festival

Atlanta Film Festival: Why join?

Because we’re MUCH more than just a festival!

For over 35 years we’ve been a growing community− some may even say family− of film lovers, filmmakers and established and emerging industry professionals. And don’t even get us started on all the benefits of being apart of this awesome community!

No, seriously.

We’re talking sneak peak screenings, exclusive invites to special events, networking outings and events and crazy discounts year-round!

Need a “for instance”?

ALL ATLFF365 membership levels receive invites to free advance screenings, and discounts on special event screenings, workshops, festival submissions & competitions. We’ve had two FREE film screenings in the past few weeks, AND, though our partnerships with the Woodruff Arts Center, Turner, Comcast and others, ATLFF365 members are privy to special discounts to a wide variety of unique experiences around town (such as 20% off the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’ s presentation of Casablanca at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre!)

Still not sold just yet?

In the just-for-kicks category… Were you aware that ATLFF365 members got to attend special Sneak Premieres of True Blood and Franklin & Bash?… the latter being attended by Mark Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer? Yep, you heard that right ATLFF365 members got to rub shoulders with Zack Morris! No big deal, right? big deal, right?

A big deal would probably be the upcoming screenings of Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, and Attack the Block, events that ATLFF365 members will be exclusively invited to.

Perks aside, we’re just a welcoming group of film-minded individuals who love movies, the arts and the beautiful city of Atlanta. It would be an honor (and plain rad) if you’d join us in continuing to foster and grow ATL’s burgeoning film scene.

Joining ATLFF365 and/or renewing your membership is the easy part; simply check out which level of membership best fits your needs and sign up online or download the form and either fax it (404. 352.0173), or email it (membership@atlantafilmfestival.com) or mail it to: Atlanta Film Festival, 535 Means Street, Ste. C, Atlanta, GA 30318.

We’re looking forward to having you join in on all the fun, and even if you decide not to join (which would be a bummer) we’d still love any support you’re willing to provide. Have you checked out our 365 Campaign? By helping us raise $36500 by August 9, 2011 (with a membership OR a tax-deductable gift/donation), you’ll be a big part of making sure that the Atlannta Film Festival remains the oldest operating film festival in Atlanta!

WHY DO I NEED IMPROV???

While teaching class recently, an actor asked me point blank, “why do I need improv?” First, let me share some misconceptions about improv:

• Improv has to be funny

• Improv is about playing games

• Improv is like stand-up comedy

• Improv is separate from acting

I could detail whey they’re misconceptions, but for the sake of brevity, just know that the above statements are FALSE. Now, let’s move on to some of the benefits of improv training:

1) The most obvious reason: you have to do improv in an audition. So often commercial auditions involve some amount of improv. Also, it’s very common to be on a TV or Film set and be asked to improvise a scene, or the director might say “just add a little something extra”. No improv training? Well, you might clam up, or make very safe choices that don’t add anything, and certainly don’t make you stand out amongst other actors.

2) Improv training teaches you how to be present in the moment. The vast majority of actors do not understand how to be “present”. They sit at home rehearsing and rehearsing, trying to lock into place their perfect performance. Then they try so desperately to recreate that performance in the audition room. That’s not acting. That’s re-enacting. When auditioning or on set, you need to be ready to embrace the environment, and welcome new stimuli that will help to shape your performance in the moment, keeping it spontaneous, or even…improvised? If you fight what’s happening in the moment, you’re completely trapped in your head, and at best you will look like a good actor delivering a good performance, as opposed to a real character living and breathing on film. Sounds like Meisner, right? (and if you don’t know Meisner, you should) I’m NOT suggesting you ad lib dialogue in a scripted audition. In general, that’s not a good idea. I’m merely suggesting that the emotional content, the reactions, the physicality, etc, be improvised.

3) Without improv training, it’s a fair assumption that you have a pretty narrow emotional comfort zone. That is, you default to a select few emotions when working on a script, and most of your reads are very similar to each other. This is not catastrophic if you’re going out for the same roles on a weekly basis. But as we know, in this industry you’re going to be thrown curveballs periodically, and if you try to default to your same comfort zone, you won’t impress anyone. Improv forces you to be creative, and to stretch that emotional comfort zone. In a single improv class you have the chance to experience more emotions than in a whole year of auditions. Working that emotional muscle every week will have a huge impact on not only your range of emotions, but also your ability to react truthfully in the moment to what’s happening in the scene.

I could go on, but I’m afraid I’ve exceeded the attention span of the average person. The moral of the story is that if you have no improv training on your resume, you have not reached your full potential as an actor. And you can’t get a “quick fix” by taking a single workshop, or even a 6-week class. Improv will take months and months of training before you truly awaken your hidden potential. I personally learned from Brian Chapman at the Professional Actor’s Studio. Don’t take my word for it, though. Audit classes at as many places as possible. Wherever you decide to train, make sure the emphasis of the class is on good acting and good scenework. Beware of the teacher who is only concerned with being funny, or playing lots of improv games (unless your goal is to join an improv troupe and perform onstage). Improv is an art form, and you need to find a teacher who understands that before you can truly benefit from it.

Special Guests tonight at Blueprint 4 Hollywood

Very exciting things are happening at Blueprint!  Directors, Producers, and Stars… Oh my!

SPECIAL GUESTS COMING TO CLASS TUES JULY 19th!  7:30p
Edwin Navas and Melissa Ewing, of Peachtree and 5th Prods. are coming to class on Tues July 19th, as your special guest speakers.  We applaud the recent success of their short film, The Promotion, which was in the short film program at the prestigious 2011 Cannes Film Festival.  They are making Atlanta look good!

This is a special, invited guests only event.  Because they are interested in the actors in our class, and seeing you work, this event is ONLY for those of you in Audition Technique (Tues night or Thursday day classes).  For those actors, you may all attend BOTH classes next week – the Guest Panel on Tues night and the Audition Technique class on Thursday, 12-2p.

If you have been through second level of marketing- Developing Your Marketing Campaign- this is a good time to bring your package, or your letter, with headshot/resume.  If you have not gotten through this level, please bring just your headshot/resume. (There are two of them, so please address each one individually, with their own letter and headshot)

Have your materials ready, be in your seats and ready to go BY 7:30p. DO NOT COME LATE.  If you do not have your headshots, resumes, or they are not stapled, please do not try to present those materials, or fix it here at the office.  It does not look professional, or represent us well.  You can write down their address when they give it, and mail it at a later date.  Check out their website to be informed before you meet them.      http://www.peachtreeand5th.com

There is a chance the director will be coming as well. This is a very exciting opportunity to learn from the people on the other side of your audition.  They will give you the insight into why they make casting decisions, and how to make a strong impact with your small amount of time in the room.  They have more films slated for production.  We are getting a rare chance to make a connection with them now, and get on their short list. When they need actors, we want them to know where to turn!  We will be ready, and make a strong, professional, welcoming impression.

If all goes well, I will be asking them to come to the Cold Reading classes next. So stay tuned!

If you are not in this class but have been through Cold Reading and want to come back in, this week (July 19th) starts the next 6 week cycle.  It does count for our Bring A Friend For Free special.  Call the office to sign up, or sign up on line.  And bring your headshots!

Also, we are having a week of MAKE UP CLASSES for Audition Technique and On Going Marketing.  Please mark your calendars!  Tues Aug 23 7:30p is a make up class for Audition Technique.  Thursday Aug 25 is a make up class for Audition Technique 12-2, and On Going Marketing 7:30p.  Thanks so much!  See you Tues July 19th—

Sincerely,

Kristen Shaw

The Chez Group is excited to announce a two-day workshop weekend with Shay Griffin and Mari Lyn Henry, who will be coming to Atlanta to join Shay, the weekend of August 6th and 7th.
Mari Lyn will conduct her highly acclaimed workshop, Getting Your Act Together!, based on her best selling book, HOW TO BE A WORKING ACTOR, now in its fifth edition and more commonly referred to by actors and industry professionals as “The Bible of the Biz.”
Mari Lyn Henry, a partner at Henry Downey Talent Management LLC, has advised thousands of actors for more than forty years on how to have successful careers in film, television, and theater.Upon leaving her position as Director of Casting, East Coast, for ABC, which she held for more than thirteen years, Mari Lyn launched an image and career consultation business.  For many years she has taught workshops and given seminars on on-camera techniques, script analysis, marketing strategies, and impression management in cities and universities across the country, as well as in Toronto, Oxford, London, and Sydney.
To read more of Mari Lyn’s career highlights, please follow this link, http://www.chezgroup.com/mlhenry.html .The weekend’s agenda will include image enhancement, scene study, and audition technique…both on and off camera. Each participant will receive individual analysis from Mari Lyn regarding all aspects of presentation.
Shay Griffin will also be on hand throughout the weekend to answer more questions about the casting process.  We have found that there is a huge demand for time devoted specifically to questions and concerns regarding auditions…and nobody is better equipped and more qualified to address the subject than casting director, Shay Griffin.
While Mari Lyn works with your talent on creating their perfect individual image for an audition, Shay continues the process through a Q & A session that runs in conjunction over the course of this two-day workshop.
For further details on the weekend’s itinerary, please follow this link, http://www.chezgroup.com/training.html
The minimum age requirement to attend this workshop is 15 years of age.

Blueprint 4 Hollywood guests

SPECIAL GUESTS COMING TO CLASS TUES JULY 19th!  7:30p
Promotion Edwin Navas and Melissa Ewing, of Peachtree and 5th Prods. are coming to class on Tues July 19th, as your special guest speakers.

Sincerely,

Working on “A Thousand Circlets” has been one of the most satisfying creative experiences I’ve had as a theatre artist.  The collaboration with Theroun Patterson, my talented playwright friend, the extraordinary design team, and this gifted and hard working cast has made this four week rehearsal process a joyous one.  You’ll get a chance to see the Leighton family coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s and the day-to-day challenge of loving one another.  Our hope is that, by seeing this play, you will support Essential Theatre’s mission of giving new playwrights a chance to have their voices heard.  I believe this is just a start for Theroun and that years from now, you’ll be talking about the first Theroun Patterson play you saw. ONE WEEK ONLY!

OCTOBER 11 – 16, 2011

AT THE ATLANTA CIVIC CENTER

ATLANTA, GA (July 11, 2011)-Following hugely successful runs on Broadway and across the pond in London, England and Lagos, Nigeria, the 3-Time Tony Award winning musical FELA! returns stateside and hits entertainment Mecca, Atlanta, GA.

FELA!, a provocative hybrid of dance, theatre and music, exploring the extravagant, and rebellious world of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is a fantastic and stunning show. The production premieres at The Atlantic Civic Center beginning on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 through  Sunday, October 16, 2011.

Tickets for FELA! go on sale this Friday, July 15. Tickets will be available through all Ticketmaster outlets, online at Ticketmaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000. Tickets will also be available for purchase at The Atlanta Civic Center Box Office beginning August 15. For group inquiries of 15 or more, call 1 (877) 737-1232 or email felagroups@gmail.com. For more information, visit http://www.atlantaciviccenter.com or http://www.felaonbroadway.com
.  All Opening Night Seats just $39.50, plus ticketing fees.

FELA! Directed by legendary award winning Bill T. Jones is based on the life of  Nigerian musician and Human Rights activist, Fela Kuti. FELA’s  soulful Afrobeat rhythms which he created ignited a  sea change in 20th century music. It is a triumphant tale of courage, passion and love, featuring Kuti’s captivating music and the visionary direction and choreography of Tony Award-winner Bill T. Jones.

FELA! reveals Kuti’s controversial life as an artist and political activist and celebrates his pioneering music (a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies). Inspired by his mother, a civil rights champion, Kuti defied a corrupt and oppressive military government and devoted his life and music to the struggle for freedom and human dignity.

FELA! received its world premiere Off-Broadway in September 2008, where it won the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical, before transferring to Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre in November 2009 where its accolades included three 2010 Tony Awards®, for Best Choreography, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Design, and an Astaire Award for Bill T. Jones’ choreography.

During its critically acclaimed, hugely successful run on Broadway FELA! was praised as “an exuberant celebration” by the Associated Press, “an ecstatic phenomenon” by Time Out New York, “explosive” by Backstage and as “an experience unlike anything you’ve ever experienced” by Broadway.com.

FELA! is directed and choreographed by Bill T. Jones, with a book by Jim Lewis and Bill T. Jones, and music and lyrics by Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Conceived by Bill T. Jones, Jim Lewis and Stephen Hendel, the design and Tony Award winning costumes are by Marina Draghici, lighting design by Robert Wierzel and the Tony Award winning sound design by Robert Kaplowitz.

FELA! produced by Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter and Will & Jada Pinkett Smith, is truly one of Broadway’s most stunning achievements.

MEISNER TECHNIQUE I
taught by Robert Mello

The Meisner Technique is considered by many to be THE best technique for film and stage. Casting directors, agents and directors are always encouraging actors to “be themselves” when reading for a role. This class works with the Meisner technique and a series of powerful exercises to help you learn how to bring the single greatest asset you can bring to any role – yourself.

These classes offer you a proven technique used by many of today’s top actors for crafting performances that are:

Truthful
Powerful
Grounded, organic and natural

Because of this, the Meisner technique is particularly well suited to film and television work. In this eight week class, you will learn and practice the foundation of any great acting: listening and responding truthfully in the moment. You will start to build an unshakeable foundation and confidence in your acting. Through dedication, hard work, and a willingness to take risks, actors leave with a solid, time tested technique that instills a profound level of confidence that serves both performance and auditions.  You will begin to master:

*How to stay out of your head
*How to make strong, exciting choices
*How to expand your emotional range and availability
*How to listen and respond truthfully and in the moment

JOSH HARRIS
Exploding onto the comedy scene, young Atlanta comedian Josh Harris has experienced a meteoric rise over the last few years. Hailed by Creative Loafing Magazine for “combining frat boy silliness with a trap star mentality,” his high energy performances and one of a kind material made him a top two finisher in the “Atlanta’s Funniest Person” competition by Dave FM in 2008. A year later he was a finalist on TV One’s Who’s Got Jokes. Receiving a standing ovation after only three short minutes, he was the only Caucasian in the show’s four year history to make it past the first round. Riding the tide of these monumental achievements, NBC recently flew him to LA to compete in the finals of the nationwide talent search Stand Up for Diversity, which showcased the country’s ten freshest comedians at The Comedy Store. His comedic brilliance is topped only by his likeability as he gains audience adoration the second he hits the stage. Josh also writes and performs sketch comedy with Sketchworks, Atlanta’s premiere sketch comedy troupe. The future is bright for this 26-year-old as he sprints to the finish line of superstardom. Now you can catch his rising star and learn what you can do to hone your own comedic style!

Dear Diary,

I don’t feel like the other teens. People have told me my whole life to stop acting up and quit clowning around.

But then I met somebody – a bunch of people actually. And I found out that I’m not alone. There are other teens who want to make fun of everything just like I do. And there are these adults called Sketchworks who want to put us on a stage so we can do it in front of other people… on purpose.

At least I think they’re adults. I just hope it’s not some kind of trap that will get me grounded for two months.

SketchTeens is Sketchworks’ summer program for teens age 13-17, made possible by a grant from Turner Voices.  Much more than a “class,” these teen actors are put through the same rigorous process of character development, rehearsals, and staging a full Sketchworks-style show that will be seen in 2 performances in the Sketchworks Theatre by live audiences.  Make sure you come see the end result of their efforts.

*Ages 11-13 to be accompanied by a parent

An introduction to Margie Haber’s philosophy and audition technique, this 3- hour seminar gives actors an opportunity to learn to breakdown a “slice of life” instinctively and physically, rather than intellectually. Her 10-step method and phrase technique (using the script without losing your life) from her successful book, How to get the Part Without Falling Apart, is shared in this seminar with actors of all levels of experience. Whether you are a beginner, an intermediate, or an advanced actor, you will learn specifically how to take the Haber Philosophy of: “Stop Acting and Live the Life of the Person” into your auditions. The tools you learn for auditioning will be easily applied to your prepared work in film, television, commercials, and theatre.

Margie will do communication skill exercises with the whole group, as well as chose actors from the seminar to come up and do a cold reading which she will provide, while others from the group learn from her valuable feedback. Whether you plan to continue your studies at home, or come to her studio in L.A., Margie’s philosophy is universal. The seminar gives actors an affordable taste of her on- camera intensive workshops. Once you have this experience with Margie, you will want more!
