Crystal Carson – Acting for Film/Television Workshops

Crystal Carson

Acting for Film/Television Workshops

Wednesday, July 13 – 5-9:30pm –  “Thought Support” – limited to 14 students – $104

The Thought Support Technique is an exercise that strengthens the muscles you need to act with the sides in your hand, so that you don’t have to waste your valuable prep time memorizing. Thought Support allows you to know the lines “by heart,” while still having a safety net.  Memorizing makes most actors susceptible to getting locked into a delivery, and/or causes actors to worry throughout the audition that they might forget their lines. The lines are the last thing that you should be worried about. It is far more important to be connected to the other person — fighting, for your needs, and changing your behavior in accordance with what you see them doing.  The “Thought Support” exercise capitalizes even further on the idea that a scene can be a high-stakes conversation, complete with objective, obstacles, relationship and environment… even when the you don’t know your lines.

Thursday, July 14 – 5-9pm – “Practical Application” – open to ALL tv/film actors – $104 ($78 if also taking the weekend intensive)

The greatest actors in tv/film all have some sort of process they follow when creating a character. Using your instincts isn’t enough!  This workshop takes actors through the steps of breaking down and analyzing the script to create the most 3-dimensional character possible. Wanna break out of the “under 5” category to book a meaty, guest-starring role….or better?!  This class will give you the tools you need to develop a career in lead and supporting roles.

Fri, July 15 – (3-8p) and Sat/Sun July 16-17 (10-5p)/- “Audition for TV/Film 3-day Intensive” – $360

“Auditioning by Heart” – This is Crystal’s “famous” weekend workshop!!!  Actors are put on tape every day and thoroughly critiqued.  Crystal offers insight rarely found in acting classes – she is able to “see” what part of your preparation needs more attention, if your performance is inappropriate for the genre, where you are truly strong, what choices you made that are weaker than other choices, and more!  This workshop gives you the tools to apply to your next audition so that you’re always improving. You will leave this workshop on a acting high!  You’ll know exactly where you need to focus your attention in order to develop a successful career in tv/film.

Stats from Lauri Plesco Ross with TAG

Stats for TAG are:

* Roughly 70% of TAG Actors have been hired for “TAG Only” jobs.
* One job at scale pays for 16 years worth of dues at $60.00/year, (unless you are Level Three because they are Lifetime Members).
* Two companies are currently requesting TAG Actors only on all of their Teleprompting jobs.
* Two additional companies (having heard “word on the street”) have called TAG to request information regarding hiring TAG Actors only on their teleprompting jobs and were given these facts:

FACT: All current Production companies/Producers requesting TAG Actors only on all of their Teleprompting jobs have gone from shooting 3 days of teleprompter work to only 1 day with TAG Actors (Level One, Two and Three!) This saves them a lot of money in the production and editing process. Actors/Agents are gaining work due to their TAG pool/demographics.

“Not only did I absolutely have a blast down there, as we were all treated like VIPs for the weekend, but more importantly, the workshop proved to be invaluable, as I received a lot of great notes and feedback that should definitely help me in making this next draft even more compelling.”

Instructions for putting yourself on tape:

To send in a self taped audition, please follow these guidelines.

1. Check With Us First: In most cases, you’re not going to know how we are submitting talent. We can only send in taped reads outside of the office if the client is accepting them electronically; if we have to submit a DVD or miniDV, then it has to be done in the office. There is almost no option to tape an audition in place of a live audition with a client. If you would like to self tape, always ask before doing so.

2. Record to Quicktime: Digital video cameras only – sorry, a webcam doesn’t cut it, but most handhelds are fine. Record in WIDESCREEN… most programs allow you to record to the computer and then convert to Quicktime (which is what we do.) You will most likely NEED some sort of software to do this, just read the manual and find out how to compress to Quicktime (.mov) – if you can’t figure it out, call tech support. We use a Mac here with iMovie, so we can only answer questions that pertain to that program. Make sure to start close up and say your NAME, HOUGHTON TALENT, and ROLE. Then, pull back for a full body shot and say your NAME and HEIGHT. Unless the script calls for it, DO NOT read directly to camera.

3.Compress the File: Raw footage makes for HUGE files, so in order to send them out you need to compress them. The majority of our auditions are compressed to a size of 240 x 320 and are 12-15 fps (frames per second.) There are other options for compression, but these are the most important and usually result in a file that’s small enough to email by itself. For auditions that come from Fincannon Casting, the size is a tad different — 680 x 720 and 15 fps — you need to make sure the settings preserve the widescreen aspect ratio with a letterbox so that the video isn’t stretched vertically to fit those settings. This usually results in a larger file.

4. Name the File: Name the file Role_FirstName_LastName.mov – for example, an audition for the role of “Agent” would be: Agent_Chase_Paris.mov  The only exception to this (at the moment) is Army Wives, which would be FirstName.LastName.Role.HT.mov  — example, Chase.Paris.Agent.HT.mov   Naming the file saves us a lot of time!

5. Send the File to Us: In order to send the file, it needs to be under 10 megabytes, otherwise it takes forever to send. If the file is too big, you can use http://www.yousendit.com (a free sharing site) and upload it there. It will notify me through email and I can then go download it. The file then can be up to 100 megabytes, much larger than anything you should be sending; DO NOT check any of the boxes with sending options, just hit send and it’ll be free. When you send the file, make sure the subject is Audition – Project Title – Role and then your name in the body of the email. We don’t always recognize who you are by your email address.

6. Make Sure All Websites are Updated: This is VERY important because when we send an electronic audition, we’re usually sending an electronic headshot and resume. If you haven’t updated it in 6-12 months, that’s not going to look good. Make sure you have up to date headshots and resumes on all of the websites and that all possible media is up there. If you have headshots that are more than 2-3 years old on any site, it’s time to upload more (and if you haven’t TAKEN new headshots in that time frame, it’s time to make an appointment!)

If you follow these simple rules you should have no problem sending in your auditions. Remember, this is a luxury and not always a possibility. So, always ask BEFORE you send in an audition or you might be wasting our time and yours. As always, if you have questions please let me know.

Q: Is there something deep about Salt, doc? I’m serious. I really wanna know.

A: Salt is vital for life. It’s pretty much as key as water. As you may know, they give you saline when you’re dehydrated… and that’s not just straight H20. And salt gives things flavor. Jesus told his disciples to be “salt and light.” That’s all pretty deep, in a spiritually-significant sort of way.

Oh, wait. You were talking about the movie, weren’t you? Yeah, there’s some of that there, too, I suppose.

The Peabody Awards: Behind the Scenes

Associate Producer, Shannon Sullivan’s inside look at this year’s awards

The winners for The 70th Annual George Foster Peabody Awards came together on May 23rd in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel in NYC to celebrate the best of the best in electronic media. It was my first time at this annual event, produced by ImageArts since 1999, and there was a lot to see! Here’s my behind the scenes look at the 70th Peabody Awards Luncheon!

Having spent the past month compiling video clips and materials from each of the winning programs, I was excited to finally be able to match names and faces. Guests included Yoko Ono, the casts from “The Good Wife” and “Men of a Certain Age”, Patrick Stewart from “Macbeth”, Spike Lee, and many more. The stars themselves didn’t intimidate… but the geek in me flipped once I saw the Executive Producer for NPR’s “Radiolab“, Ellen Horne!

It was fitting that for the 70th Annual Presentation, the video Tribute to Winners was created in stunning HD for the first time. A much larger screen as well as HD cameras, switcher, playback and projection really enhanced the experience for the audience. Enthusiastic applause greeted the conclusion of the video, crowned by an animation featuring 70 years worth of amazing Peabody winners. It was fascinating to see the clips from all of these diverse winners edited together into a seamless whole. Although I had seen it over and over in the edit suite, watching it on the big screen was like seeing it for the first time!

As someone new to the event, I also noticed all the details that other Peabody veterans may not even notice. Just look at the 70th Peabody medallions that were on the chocolate cake!

You may have seen the press release announcing Larry King as the Master of Ceremonies for the Peabody Luncheon this year. He was a terrific host, adding his own personal sense of humor and flair to the event! Here is Jody working with him on stage with his blue notecards that he requested instead of a traditional script.

I’m so happy to have been apart of this year’s Peabody Awards. It really is an exciting day for all of the winners as well as a wonderful reward for the many months of production here for the Atlanta ImageArts’ Creative Team! Congratulations to all the winners and all the Peabody staff for a successful event!

“Attending the Screenwriters Lab was invigorating and made me feel completely alive as an artist!”

“This competition offers you what very few can, a personal and relaxed atmosphere to meet with professionals who are willing to take the time to not only get to know your writing but you as a person.”

“Not only did I absolutely have a blast down there, as we were all treated like VIPs for the weekend, but more importantly, the workshop proved to be invaluable, as I received a lot of great notes and feedback that should definitely help me in making this next draft even more compelling.”

Workshop w/ Shay Griffin & Ric Reitz

The Chez Group is excited to announce that Shay Griffin and Ric Reitz will conduct their two-part seminar, Putting Your Best Professional Foot Forward, Saturday, June 18th from 10 AM to 5:30 PM!

With an influx of talent coming to Atlanta from all over the country to take advantage of the amazing opportunities in film and television that are here, it is more important than ever that your clients be at the top of their game.  We appreciate your ongoing support of our workshop series by getting the word out to those clients who you feel would benefit from our program.

Putting Your Best Professional Foot Forward, with Shay Griffin and Ric Reitz , is geared towards accomplishing the following for each actor who participates:

Shay Griffin will speak from a casting director’s perspective as she guides you through the important process of how to best market yourself in this highly competitive industry.

Any slight edge you can gain over your competition could mean the difference between getting a callback or not.  Shay will help you navigate the important steps necessary to master the “business of the business”.  Topics of discussion will range from headshots and resumes to how you walk into the audition room and conduct yourself like a professional actor…including the major do’s and don’ts.  The morning session with Shay will run from 10 AM to 1:30 PM.

Once Shay has helped you to get the role, the last thing you want to do is lose the job because you are unprepared or uninformed.  Ric Reitz will lead the afternoon session from 2 PM to 5:30 PM and will be focusing on helping you keep the  job!  Topics of discussion will include set etiquette and sound stage techniques.  We have all heard the saying that time is money…you do not want to cost the production company money because of your lack of knowledge or your inexperience on the set…and you could ultimately lose the job!

After spending this two-part day with Shay and Ric, you will be prepared to jumpstart your professional acting career.

The cost of this one day workshop is $135.  For your convenience, there is a PayPal button on the training page of the website.  Here is the link, http://www.chezgroup.com/training.html .

The workshop location is the Doubletree by Hilton Atlanta/N. Druid Hills located at 2061 N. Druid Hills Road, Atlanta, GA 30329.  We will be meeting on the second floor in the Dogwood Room.
