Henry County willing to turn Tara Field into movie studio

Henry County willing to turn Tara Field into movie studio
By Ralph Ellis
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Movie madness has spread to the Southside.
The Henry County Commission has taken a big step in allowing a film production company to set up a studio at Tara Field, the airport near Atlanta Motor Speedway.
The commission voted 4-1 Tuesday night to support a proposed agreement between the county and Big 5 Enterprises of Stockbridge. Big 5 must come back within 60 days with the detailed agreement for the commission to study.
Billy Abbate, Big 5 managing partner, predicted the studio will boost the Southside economy. A movie produced by a major movie company could bring $100 million to the community, and the studio could generate 300 movie jobs and spin off another 2,000 support jobs.
Initially, six leased hangars at Tara Field in Hampton will be converted into movie sound stages, Abbate said, and Big 5 will build two 50,000-square-foot sound stages. The company also would build 51,000 square feet of airport infrastructure.
Movie production has taken off in Georgia, due in part to generous tax breaks provided by state government. Numerous movies have been filmed here, recently among them “The Blind Side.” However, local movie studios are in short supply.
Tyler Perry earlier started his own studio in south Atlanta where he has produced his “Madea” films and TV shows. Last month, the Atlanta City Council approved a 50-year lease for the Lakewood Fairgrounds to be used as film studios and sound stages by Screen Gems. Turner Studios in Atlanta and Riverwood Studios in Senoia have operated for years.
Big 5 has tried to win county commission approval for months. The commission liked the idea of an economic jolt but feared tax liability, said Bob White of the county development authority.
“Big 5 wanted a commitment that if revenues fell short to cover the debt service, the county would step in and make up the gap from taxing power,” White said.
The county commission, which was in the process of trimming the county budget, balked. After months of negotiations, the company offered more safeguards and the commission voted for approval. Only Johnny Basler voted no, saying the county could still be on the hook if the enterprise collapses.
“Securing it, if all else fails, with up to one mill of taxpayers’ money, that’s the problem I’ve had all along,” Basler said.
Monroe Roark, the commissioner for the Hampton area, said the agreement will minimize the county’s financial liability.
“I think the taxpayers have been protected,” Roark said.
The resolution approved on Tuesday night stated that the county development authority could issue up to $40 million in bonds. Big 5 promised to make an initial cash contribution of $500,000 to help the county set up a debt service reserve fund. Big 5 also must provide a $15 million letter of credit.
Big 5, which previously had concentrated on real estate development, leases several lots at Tara Field, which is owned by Clayton County though it is located in Henry County.
Abbate said Big 5 owned nearly 100 acres next to Tara Field and could expand if necessary. The studio project will be supervised by RoadTown Enterprises Limited of Los Angeles, a consulting company.
Having the airstrip next to the studio is a big selling point and the studio location close to Atlanta will make it easy to find skilled movie production workers, White said.

Atlanta, GA (Vocus) June 8, 2010 — EUE/Screen Gems has opened a studio complex in the former Lakewood Fairgrounds site near midtown Atlanta. The new studio targets film, television and digital production communities and commercial agencies in the United States and other countries as potential clients. According to the lease agreement with the City of Atlanta, EUE/Screen Gems can book films and television series in an existing soundstage now. One nationally recognized entertainment brand is currently shooting a film at the facility.
EUE/Screen Gems is undertaking a multi-million dollar phased renovation for the property and is updating five other buildings. They will start construction on a new 37,500-foot sound stage that will be ready in March 2011. Plans include the development of office space, a mill shop and lighting and grip facilities. The Lakewood site has a film history. It was home to “Smokey and the Bandit” the 1977 film that inspired other trucking films and its own sequels.
This investment represents another bold move for the bullish studio provider who currently houses the “Rachael Ray” show in New York City and offers a 50-acre studio complex in Wilmington, N.C.
“Producers, directors and studios came to us and asked us to go into Atlanta. We were humbled by that vote of confidence, and we feel strongly about how this investment further extends our offerings,” says Chris Cooney, chief operating officer and co-owner of EUE/Screen Gems. “Through our properties in New York City, Wilmington and now Atlanta, we provide coastal, rural and urban settings to our clients as well as size and infrastructure needed to handle intensive special effects for film, commercial and gaming needs. This urban location expands our portfolio in a powerful way.”
Cooney says the company was also drawn to the attractive 30 percent tax credit to qualified production and post-production expenditures. The credit is available not only to traditional motion picture projects such as feature films, television series, commercials and music videos, but also innovative new industries such as game development and animation. In addition to the incentive, the city’s ethnic and cultural diversity in the talent base was a draw as well as the close proximity to the airport and the number of direct flights to Los Angeles and New York.
Bill Thompson, Deputy Commissioner of the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office welcomes the arrival of EUE/Screen Gems. “The agreement between EUE/Screen Gems and the City of Atlanta could not have come at a better time,” said Thompson. “Having a high-profile soundstage in the metro area will only add to the many assets Georgia offers for the film industry. We are building this industry in Georgia, and EUE/Screen Gems locating here helps us achieve that goal. The new facility will create more jobs for Georgians and increase our competitiveness as a state for film and television productions.”
For more on the Georgia incentive and the sales and use tax exemption, visit http://www.georgia.org/GeorgiaIndustries/Entertainment/AboutUs/Pages/Incentives.aspx
The expansion into the Lakewood community was widely heralded in the Atlanta press as a source of jobs in a growing, vibrant industry.

Margie Haber at YourAct in July

INTERMEDIATE HABER FILM/TV AUDITION INTENSIVE!
6:30-10:30PM, MONDAYS & THURSDAYS, JULY 5-29
with DELLA COLE

This Intensive course is designed for trained actors who have some audition experience.

As professional actors, we often audition and work on projects that don’t necessarily challenge the full spectrum of our talents. You may be comfortable with industrials, commercials, and voice-over but fall apart when you audition for a film. With the increase of film and television in production in Georgia, now more than ever, Atlanta talent needs to be ready for Hollywood auditions.

In this Intermediate Intensive, actors work with film and television scripts, learning how to nail the audition in a limited amount of time. The focus is on the nuts and bolts of breaking down a scene, including relationship, intention, history, opening and closing beats, core and masking. Using the skills you learn will greatly improve your audition skills. This valuable cold-reading technique works.

8 classes – July 5-29
6:30-10:30PM, MONDAYS & THURSDAYS, July 5, 8, 12, 15, 19, 22, 26, 29
LIMITED TO 12.
$350 (may be paid in 2 installments of $175)
Required: On-Camera Acting II, working actor, agent representation, or Instructor approval

Katie Cofield wrote about her experience in the Intermediate Haber Intensive, which Della taught:

Of all the wonderful things I learned in this class, the most important, seemingly obvious, trick was. . . how to hold the page! It’s such a wonderful image, thinking of bridging the gap between yourself and the other person in the conversation using the page!

I thoroughly enjoyed Della’s comments on our work. So many teachers give you “That was nice” or “That could have been better”. And that’s not helpful. Della’s specificity of critique is great and so constructive!

The creating of the relationship and remembering that it’s the most important thing really works for me, and it was so much more fun to act when I was really connected to the other person in the scene. It made everything fall into place and forced me into just relating honestly at all moments. It made all of my creation of history actually mean something, and made my need in the scene even more important when I was fully locked in to the relationship.

I really liked it when the class doubled up and we had two classes a week. I felt like more was sinking in each class because we had the opportunity to practice with greater frequency in a shorter amount of time.

This class was SUCH a gift! I had several auditions during the weeks of class, and I could tell such a difference- my confidence that I really knew what to do had skyrocketed! For me, it was also such a relief to remember to trust myself and just play. Thank you!!!

Why Georgia Ensemble Theatre Summer Camps?

Summertime is upon us and with that comes a plethora of summer camp options. What makes Georgia Ensemble Theatre & Conservatory’s summer camps so special? Check out what some of our students, parents, and supporters are saying:

“GET was a unique experience for me. It gave me a shelter where I could be myself and experiment with my acting. I felt safe there and found friends who now feel like one big family together. The times I’ve had there have been some of the best of my life and have helped me grow into a better actor and person.” – Bailey Moran (student)

“Just wanted to tell you what a great job all of the kids did on Saturday. Michaela had an amazing time, learned so much and is eager to return again. This was our first experience with GET and we would definitely recommend it to others!” – Michele Patafio (parent)

“I experienced a completely different environment where it was okay to make mistakes and where you could learn in a very safe place. It made me realize my own potential and gave me the confidence I needed to pursue my dreams.” – Danielle Girardeau (student)

“Such an honor to have your students in plays at all the North Fulton High Schools. Keep up the good work. Before long you will be going to see your students on Broadway.” – Ruby Purdie (board member)

“Thanks so much for helping Griffin have a wonderful summer. I think it’s so important for him to have productive activities scheduled for the summer.” – Donna Wilkens (parent)

“It was such a fun experience! And it changed my life….by making me a lot better at acting and it made me love it so much. Everyone is so nice there and the plays were unforgettable. I will never forget the memories I’ve had at GET.” – Lily Rose (student)

“If I had not attended G.E.T. then I would have never realized my dream of being a professional actor. I gained connections, friends, and talents throught G.E.T. and I would not be the same actor today without it. It’s amazing how G.E.T. can change your life for the better in just a 2 week camp…even though I went for much more than just that.” – Griffin Freeman (student)

“Are you focused and prepared to invest in yourself, your career, your skills? Let’s get to work.” — Clayton Landey

Clayton Landey, who currently plays Judge Brody on “Drop Dead Diva,” leads an advanced/professional group of actors who want to continue developing their craft at a high level between acting jobs.

Scene Study for Working Actors is about creating intense emotional realities and vibrant imaginary worlds to live in while you act. It is the creation of these experiential realities that will impel you to eliminate emotional blocks and develop imaginations. Learn to truly live at a high level and put into practice specific acting tools for experiencing the profound hopes, dreams and deepest desires of each character you play — and do it in front of complete strangers and on cue.

“The office of drama is to exercise, possibly to exhaust, human emotions. The purpose of comedy is to tickle those emotions into an expression of light relief; of tragedy, to wound them and bring the relief of tears. Disgust and terror are the other points of the compass.”
— Laurence Olivier

“I went home and did some rehearsing to satisfy my curiosity about whether I could play an Italian. I put on some makeup, stuffed Kleenex in my cheeks, and worked out the characterization first in front of a mirror, then on a television monitor. After working on it, I decided I could create a characterization that would support the story. The people at Paramount saw the footage and liked it, and that’s how I became the Godfather.”
— Marlon Brando
Clayton Landey Studied acting with Marlon Brando, Stella Adler and Daryl Hickman. He has over 300 acting credits over the past 35 years and has worked with Sean Penn, Sally Field, John Ritter, Whoopi Goldberg, John Travolta, James Caan and many others.
His TV credits include: Series Regular role on

RiverWood inks management deal with big-name studio

By Jeff Bishop
The Times-Herald
RiverWood Studios in Senoia has inked a deal with Raleigh Studios in Hollywood that President Scott Tigchelaar said should “have a pretty big impact” on the regional film industry.
“Raleigh Studios is the largest owner and manager of stages and studio facilities in the world,” said Tigchelaar. “They have locations throughout the world, in Hollywood, Baton Rouge, Detroit, Budapest, you name it.”
RiverWood Studios will now be called “Raleigh Studios Atlanta at RiverWood,” Tigchelaar said.
“And they are bringing their grip and lighting company, Hollywood Rentals, out here,” he said. “Raleigh is a marquis brand in the industry, and their presence here is going to be huge.”
As the longest continuously operating studio in the country, Raleigh Studios has played a central role in creating and supporting the modern entertainment industry, according to its Web site, while Hollywood Rentals is one of the premier lighting equipment rental companies in the country.
Along with the company’s theatrical lighting division, Olesen Lighting, and expendable supply business ESS, Raleigh services the lighting, transportation and consumable needs of film and theatrical productions across the greater United States, Mexico, the Bahamas, the Caribbean and soon Europe.
Together, Raleigh’s entertainment companies comprise the largest independent studio and production support operation in the nation, according to the company Web site.
In 1915, Raleigh’s Hollywood studio commenced operations as Famous Players Fiction Studios, with a Mary Pickford production — one of the first features to be filmed on this historic Hollywood lot.
Tigchelaar said the new deal will help RiverWood Studios remain competitive now that Screen Gems is coming to Lakewood in Atlanta.
The Atlanta City Council approved a multi-million dollar, 50-year lease to rent out the Lakewood Fairgrounds to EUE/Screen Gems earlier in May.
EUE/Screen Gems will utilize about 30 acres of the fairgrounds and the fairground’s Spanish Mission Revival exhibition halls and convert them into sound studios, according to the agreement. Some 40,000 square feet of new sound stages will accommodate television, commercial, digital and film productions.
When asked if the Screen Gems and Raleigh presences here will be synergistic or competitive, Tigchelaar said it will probably be “a bit of both.”
“Screen Gems is certainly going to be a competitor,” he said. “Their presence here and Raleigh’s presence here now really both underscore the positive impact the Georgia tax incentives are having. We’re getting real players to Georgia.”
He said Raleigh Studios will bring its decades of experience in movie marketing and production to this community.
“This is a company that keeps 90 percent of its facilities booked 90 percent of the time,” he said. “So we see this as a foundation we can use to expand and grow and better service the industry here.”
