Chez Group March Workshops

Upcoming Classes or Workshops:

Chez Studio, founded by Shay Griffin, continues to offer professional training to actors, new and veteran. All of our instructors have extraordinary backgrounds and are committed to preparing the upcoming talent pool. Writers, producers, directors, actors, casting directors and industry leaders have followed Shay Griffin’s leadership to continue building a working force of actors in Georgia and the Southeast.
JASON L. WOOD, C.S.A. Casting Director and Producer Jason Wood began his career in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia working for award winning casting director, Shay Griffin. After gaining valuable experience and exposure, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his passion and continue his career. Arriving on the West coast, he settled in Hollywood and was soon recruited by Randy Stone, head of casting at Twentieth Century Fox Television to serve as a casting executive for the studio. During his time at 20th, the studio produced many memorable prime time television shows such as: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, X-Files, The Practice, The Simpsons, Dharma & Greg and Ally McBeal. These shows are notable for their discoveries of breakout stars that went on to become household names. Wood was then hired as the Vice President of Talent and Casting for Peter Guber’s Mandalay Pictures Television. At Mandalay, Wood participated in the development of projects for television and new media and served as casting director on Rude Awakening, a Showtime series with Lynn Redgrave, Sherilynn Fenn and Tim Curry along with the Coca-Cola sponsored series Young Americans. This WB series marked the television debut of future stars Kate Bosworth, Kate Moenning, Charlie Hunnam and Michelle Monaghan. As an independent casting director, Wood has worked on projects for all major network and cable outlets, including the Emmy winning Monk on USA starring Tony Shalhoub and most recently the ABC pilot and series Samantha Who? earning a 2008 Emmy for Jean Smart and a nomination for Christina Applegate. Wood and his partner Tammara Billik received a 2008 Artios nomination for Outstanding Comedy Pilot Casting. They are currently casting a Lifetime miniseries “Maneater” starring Sarah Chalke. Not limited to television, Wood has also established himself in award winning features. He cast the 2005 Sundance Film Festival hit Quinceanera, which accomplished the rare feat of winning both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. He also cast 2007 Outfest HBO Audience Award winner Shelter, 2007 Toronto Film Festival hit Ping Pong Playa, and Pedro, which premiered at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival. Wood received a 2007 Artios nomination for Outstanding Feature Casting for Quinceanera and a win in 2008 for the feature Park starring Ricki Lake, Cheri Oteri and William Baldwin. He is currently casting Kent State, based on the 1970 shootings and Flicka 2 for Fox. In his spare time, Wood serves on the board of the Casting Society of America, and is a youth mentor with LifeWorks. He was recently featured on the cover of the Motion Picture Fund magazine highlighting his volunteer work with their elder programs and is an active fundraiser for various local charities.. He has also traveled extensively speaking about the casting and audition process. Until February 17, 2010, loan-outs were able to request a waiver of the withholding requirements in Massachusetts; if granted, Massachusetts income tax did not need to be withheld in order to qualify the loan-out for the incentive. After February 17, 2010, the waiver will no longer be granted for motion picture productions, therefore Massachusetts withholding needs to be paid for all loan-outs; also, an agreement signed by payroll company, production company, and loan-out company authorizing the payroll deduction must be executed for each loan-out company.

The new incentives legislation in Virginia will provide a refundable tax credit, with $10 million available per year. The current draft will be revised.

“What I Did Last Summer” Opening Next Week at GET

Georgia Ensemble Theatre proudly presents A.R. Gurney’s gentle and funny coming-of-age story, What I Did Last Summer, February 25-March 14, 2010, at our home in the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. You don’t want to miss this lovely play by one of America’s most prolific playwrights, directed by GET founding member Tess Malis Kincaid (pictured right) and featuring an amazing cast!

About the Play:
The time is summer of 1945. WWII has taken the world by storm. Husbands and fathers have had to join their countries’ forces in battles far and wide, leaving their families to attempt a normal existence without them. As one family spends their summer on the Canadian shore of Lake Erie, 14 year-old Charlie (Chris Moses) has flunked Latin, but rather than study, he wants to be swimming or playing pranks with his best friend (Eric Mendenhall). He takes a job as a handyman for a bohemian art teacher (Megan McFarland) who tries to stretch Charlie’s mind by teaching him painting and sculpture, leading to a showdown between the art teacher and Charlie’s mother (Mary Lynn Owen). This clash of philosophies will prove to be a turning point in shaping the man Charlie is destined to become.

Please Note: What I Did Last Summer is rated PG due to some mild language that may be inappropriate for young children.

STAND – A Tavis Smiley Film free screening tonight

Indie Cinema Night
Monday, February 22, 2010 – Atlanta, Georgia

Join the Urban Mediamakers tonight for a Black History Month 2010 free screening at the Mechanicsville Branch of the Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library.

STAND – A Tavis Smiley Film
It was the summer of 2008 in Memphis, birthplace of Blues. America was commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., against the backdrop of then Senator Barack Obama emerging as the first African American to become the Democratic presidential nominee. As America approached the historic presidential election, the national dialogue and debate intensified about race relations, politics and the legacy of the civil rights movement.
Broadcaster Tavis Smiley dissects this national discourse with ten Black male friends over several days during a special road trip through Memphis and Nashville. While visiting places like the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. King died, and Stax records, credited with laying the roots of southern soul, Smiley and friends explore the diversity and complexity of the Black male experience in America past, present and future.
STAND reveals the journey of a unique group of scholars, musicians, comedians and social critics as they gather for a rare reflection of brotherhood while confronting their own roles and responsibilities as pioneers of social progress.
Tavis Smiley’s “Stand” documentary featuring Dick Gregory, Michael Eric Dyson, Cornel West, Cliff West, Eddie Glaude, BeBe Winans, Wren T. Brown, Daron Boyce, Robert Smith and Raymond Ross. Special appearances by Sam Moore, Isaac Hayes and David Porter.

Past Life: Struggling FOX TV Show Cancelled after Three Episodes

Published: February 19, 2010

Past Life canceled on FOXFor a show about past lives and reincarnation, FOX’s show has certainly had a very short lifespan. With poor ratings and reviews, the network has cancelled Past Life after three episodes.

Inspired by the book, Reincarnationist by M.J. Rose, Past Life revolves around past-life detectives who try to discover if a person’s problems and visions stem from traumatic events in a former life. The series stars Kelli Giddish, Nicholas Bishop, Ravi Patel, and Richard Schiff.

FOX had originally ordered 13 episodes of Past Life but, in mid-October, cut that to just seven installments. The official reason given was that the network had a plethora of mid-season programming but the move sure wasn’t a sign of confidence for the project.

The TV series got off to a poor start with a special showing on Tuesday, February 9th. Past Life averaged 8.32 million viewers and a 2.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Those numbers aren’t bad on their own but they do represent a loss of about 70% of the American Idol lead-in audience. What’s more, a significant number of people stopped watching before the Past Life episode had finished. An average of 9.6 million were watching the first half hour but only 7.14 million watched the second half.

Should Past Life have been cancelled?
Yes! Are you kidding?
No! Are you kidding?

Loading … Loading …

A couple days later, Past Life debuted in its regular Thursday night timeslot. Predictably, it was pummeled by the competition. It came in at fourth place in its timeslot with just 5.3 million viewers and a terrible 1.4 in the demo.

Last night’s episode was even worse. Per the overnight ratings, Past Life registered just 3.9 million viewers and a 1.1 in the 18-49 demographic. That’s particularly disappointing when you consider that most of the other networks were in repeats.

American Idol will be expanding to Thursday nights for the next three weeks and run at 8pm. Rather than give more time to a sinking ship, FOX execs have decided to pull Past Life and replace the drama with episodes of Kitchen Nightmares.

Nightmares will continue to air on Friday nights but those episodes will be repeats. On April 1st, original episodes of Bones and Fringe will take over on Thursdays. New episodes of Nightmares will then resume on Fridays.

The network says that the remaining four episodes of Past Life will surface at some point in the season but, given their overflow of successful programming, that doesn’t seem all that likely.

It would seem that the Past Life cancellation was decided either late last night or very early this morning. The “masked scheduler” tweeted, “Drove on to the lot and the Past Life poster was being torn down….hmmmmmm.”

Senoia Welcomed Filmmakers

Films, TV Has People Flocking to Senoia
SENOIA, Ga (MyFOX ATLANTA) – Jack Bauer and the FOX hit TV show “24” were back for season 8 Sunday night. The man behind the show’s special effects demonstrated why Hollywood and soon tens of thousands of people will be flocking to a small Georgia town.
Big time Hollywood special effects are done on the set of “24” out in Hollywood. The man behind the show’s explosions and effects spends his days in the little town of Senoia in Coweta County. That’s the home of Paul Lombardi’s Riverwood Studios.
Riverwood has been building real, turn of the century style architecture buildings as a way of restoring Senoia, while providing backdrops to Hollywood films and television shows.
“Now we have “Drop Dead Diva” coming here, shooting Senoia as Los Angeles which is kind of an interesting turnaround. So here we are standing here in Senoia, but in the movie industry we could be in Los Angeles, any place. Sure, that’s the magic of Hollywood right?” said Lombardi.
Lombardi buildings are filled with shops and restaurants. A new restaurant called Founders is set to open next month. Riverwood Studios built the 1920’s style bar for the owner in hopes of using it some day in a movie.
“If you think about [it], they are building sets all the time. I have always considered restaurants a theater anyway,” said Todd Baggarly of Founders restaurant.
“We had a scenic artist from L.A. come out here and paint this thing so it’s an aged sign that looks like its been here for 50 years. Just like a movie set. It is a movie set, it’s all a movie set. It looks like 1910 and guess what it isn’t,” said Lombardi.
Lombardi said it’s the same with this season of “24”. On the show, Hollywood is made to look like somewhere else.
“We are up to our necks in “24.” This year is kind of cool. It’s shot in Hollywood, [but] made to look like New York, so there is a lot of CGI work and backdrops, that sort of thing,” said Lombardi.
Senoia is about to make national headlines with New York style brownstones. Riverwood Studios is building them. The brownstones are real homes.
“Southern Living” magazine has picked one as its idea house for 2010. The magazine is the country’s 7th largest magazine, with a readership of 16 million. The issue has the potential to drive more than 40,000 people to tour the idea house in Senoia this year. The edition will hit newsstands in August.
The idea house opens for public tours in June and will the tours will run through December. The tours are expected to bring a big economic boost to the small town.
The TV series “Drop Dead Divas” starts shooting it’s second season in the next few months.
