We have a new procedure for your child to be considered for this audition.  Please go to www.actorsaccess.com and create a profile for your baby.  This is a secure website and you can post 2 photos at no charge.

What we need you to do:

Log in to Actor’s Access.  All of this info is done in your child’s name with their stats.
If you have never signed up for Actor’s Access please see the info at the bottom of the page to get started.  Click on REGISTER.

Please indicate that you want to be attached to Houghton Kids.
Once registered, please post 2 free images on this site.  They do not have to be professional shots, snapshots are great.  Please make sure they are current photos (less than 4 weeks old).

Make sure all your child’s personal data is filled in and correct.  No one has access to this data unless we allow them to see it.  We especially need the child’s DATE OF BIRTH and your contact info, including cell numbers, email address, and your name.
I’ll be back in touch with details if the client wants to see your child in person on Friday.

Once you have done all of this please email deb@houghtontalent.com with your child’s name, your name, phone number, and email address.  Once we’ve received all of this we’ll be able to use your child for the submission!

Once you’re set up we will keep submitting your child as opportunities arise – all you need to do is update your child’s picture with a current one every month and keep their stats (height, weight, etc) up to date!

Crystal Carson Workshop

Crystal Carson is doing a workshop in Atlanta Friday 7/24-Sunday, 7/26.  There’s info about that attached to this post (see link below) but what we really want you to know is that the weekend prior she’s got two mini workshops scheduled that are very affordable and will be incredibly informative.  While we aren’t hosting these workshops, we strongly encourage you to avail yourself of the opportunity to get an L.A. perspective on auditioning and make adjustments where needed.

The morning session “The 10 Things L.A. Directors/Producers Are Looking For” is geared toward the idea that when producers, directors and casting directors come into town, they are gauging the Atlanta reads against what they normally see – and unfortunately, in that light, most Atlanta actors often come up short.  This reflects poorly on the market and doesn’t set us up for success.

The afternoon session is a Film/TV critique of actual current taped reads from various actors (who’ve asked/agreed to be critiqued) and should be really helpful for gleaning some specific things actors may/may not do in the audition that can make all the difference.

We know it’s been slow otherwise but film/TV are hopping and everyone needs to bring their A game every time.  Please consider getting in on these workshops if you can.

Thanks and best,
Mystie

Chez Workshop

ADULT WORKSHOP:

June 13th and 14th

UP TO THE EDGE BUT NOT OVER THE TOP: FULL EMOTION ON FILM.

If 90% of camera acting centers on finding richness in reality of the ordinary exchanges of daily life, the remainder observes the uncharacteristic release of feelings most of us try to keep hidden. On the first day of this two-day course, we will explore varied techniques for tapping emotion and attaching it to the text, and the use of several triggers to keep it handy during the distractions of filming. Scenes demanding deep, complex, or surprising release of feeling will be provided at the end of the first session for overnight prep, and the second session of the weekend will be devoted to filming and playback. The course aims to determine the most effective tools for each individual actor, and will vary from person to person. Because of the specific attention required, class size will be limited to 16.

Artist’s Showcase of Atlanta

Please see below for an upcoming opportunity from Shontelle Thrash, a wonderful Atlanta talent represented by Houghton.  If you are interested please contact her directly (link is at the bottom).

———————————————————————————
ARTIST’S SHOWCASE OF ATLANTA

Do you want to be seen by some of the top casting directors, producers, directors, theatre representatives, photographers, franchised agents etc.?

Do you want to get more work?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, then the Artist’s Showcase of Atlanta is for you.

I have lived in Atlanta for over 12 years.  I’ve performed in NY, LA, nationally and internationally.  There are showcases being done in both LA and NY and other cities all the time.  Atlanta is one of THE hotspots in the entertainment industry.  Approximately 50 movies will be filmed in Atlanta THIS YEAR.  Many have already been filmed.  Agents and casting directors are always looking for new talent.  And what better way to show your skills than in a showcase.  Now, there are different types of showcases.  Some of these include:

1.    Showcases that might occur after taking a workshop.
2.    Showcases put on by different universities at the end of their training..i.e. MFA program.
3.    Showcases that occur at the end of an internship.  This is how I got my agent in Atlanta almost 12 years ago.
4.    Showcases where the actors audition to be part of a group where they put together material to present to agents, casting directors, etc., The Artist’s Showcase of Atlanta falls under this category.

These are just some of the main showcases that are put together.  I’m sure there are others.

Now, in every example given, the actor has to pay something.  In a workshop, the actor generally pays for the workshop and the showcase is included in that fee.  In a MFA program, obviously, you’re paying to go to school.  In an internship, you’re giving away your time and energy free of charge to assist with the needs of the theatre or whatever institution you’re interning for.  And then, you have the one where talented actors pay a fee to be able to present either scenes or monologues to agents, casting directors, etc. The actor has a goal to either get representation, or to get more work; preferably both.

Actor’s benefits:

•    Actors will be seen by some of the top casting directors, theatre representatives, photographers, franchised agents etc.  Have you ever heard the statement:  “Always do your best when performing because you never know who’s in the audience?”  Well, that’s an understatement.  You will be performing in front of a live audience; and you never know who’s out there waiting to hire you for your next job.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked out after a show to have someone hand me a card mentioning either a gig they want me for or for another project.  I’ve even received calls months later about work based on a show I’ve done. A lot of the casting directors…i.e. Fincannons, Tracy Kilpatrick, Chez generally won’t see you unless you’re submitted by an agent.
•    Actors will perform original works by some of our prestigious and award-winning writers.  Ah, the pressure of performing a scene that some of our best and finest film actors in the industry have put their stamp on; and trying to make the agent and casting director remember you in this role and not the star that made it famous.  Here’s your chance to put your own stamp on an original work.  What better way to leave a lasting impression on their minds.
•    Working 1 ½ months to put this showcase together.  We will work to put together a showcase that best shows your talents.  You’re in control of your destiny here.  When you audition in front of a casting director for a role, have you ever thought, “Man, I wish I could’ve auditioned for that other part; I know I can do that.” Have you ever wished you could show the casting director another side of you?  Well, here’s your opportunity.  You’re not performing a scene in front of a camera with a reader.  You get to show them your chops, so to speak.  Also, if you have an agent, it’s always good for your agent to see what else you can do.  This might broaden their minds as to what other roles you can play.  If you’re a theatre actor, then you probably have a pretty wide range.
•    Actors will receive feedback about their auditions.  When you didn’t get that job, didn’t you want to know why?  In film, a lot of times, it has nothing to do with whether or not you nailed the audition; but more to do with your look.  I always want to know how I did after an audition; so I thought this would be a good opportunity for the actors to receive feedback by industry professionals about what was good and what didn’t work, etc.  Actors receiving the most positive feedback from our industry professionals will receive gifts from our wonderful sponsors.
•    Other surprises are yet to come

I can’t promise that every actor will walk away with an agent and more gigs.  Obviously, that’s out of my hands.  But hopefully, each actor will have learned something during this process of rehearsing and putting together a successful showcase.  If you don’t get representation, at least you can walk away with what you need to do to better yourself as an artist and an actor’s workbook to aide that process.

AUDITION DETAILS:

WHO: Actors ages 18 and older

WHEN April 26, 2009, 2pm – 5pm

WHERE: Clayton State Univ., 2000 Clayton State Blvd., Morrow, GA  30260
Arts & Sciences Bldg. Rm. G-132, in the theatre

Auditions:  You must go through a preliminary audition in order to be chosen for the showcase.  Please bring 4 headshots/resumes to the audition.  You will need to prepare a monologue no longer than 2 min.  If you would like to sing, please prepare 16 bars to be sung accapella.

If chosen for the showcase, there will be an entry fee of $275.  Putting together a successful showcase is A LOT of work. It takes months of planning to make this event a success, i.e. venue, sponsors, tech crew, etc. Providing all of these services is not free. My goal is to see all my fellow actors working on a regular basis.  So, for me, it’s worth it.

SHOWCASE DETAILS:

WHEN:  July 20, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.  Doors will open at 7:00 p.m.

WHERE: Horizon Theatre, 1083 Austin Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30307

If interested in auditioning, please send an email to Artistsshowcase@live.com to request an audition slot.

Disclaimer:  This showcase is in no way affiliated with Horizon Theatre.  They have allowed me to use their space for the purposes of the showcase.  Many thanks go to Lisa and Jeff Adler for their generosity.

State of Affairs in LA

We received this ”status of the business” that an agent in LA sent out to his actors.  It gives an overview of how business is there and is VERY informative about the current situation regarding TV/Film/Commercials and the economy.  We see the trickle down effect in the SouthEast.  With the incentives, though, there has been an increase in film activity so that’s promising even though the bigger roles may be taken by name talent.  If you’re considering moving to LA, this is compelling information on why you might rethink that.

——————–

I wanted to take a moment and give you a number of important updates….

Before I begin, however, I wish to tell you all that I am so very proud of you all for your dogged determination during these most difficult times. Hollywood is being challenged on multiple fronts – labor uncertainty, paradigm shifting and the ‘great recession’.

I know a lot of your are getting antsy to get out more, and frankly many of you are in a tight financial pinch; as such, I wanted to describe to you all the current climate in LA and the factors influencing the current environment.

1 SAG STALEMATE: Since the SAG contract expired on June 30, 2008, there have been few to no STUDIO feature films (this does not include companies such as Lionsgate and the Weinstein Company who are not in AMPTP and as such have completion agreements). Some analysts say there are up to 200 feature films on hold. Around September, we started to see a mass movement of film actors to TV projects. Many of my “name” actors have done one-day guest stars (this is very typical right now), and we are seeing a number of Guest Star level actors doing CO-STAR roles. Remember from November of 2007 to March of 2008, due to the Writer’s Strike, again there were no feature films shot. So for the film actor, there has only been 4 months of work in the last 17 months. THE BOTTOM LINE: Due to the lack of studio feature film production, BOTH film and TV actors are now competing for a limited number of jobs in the episodic and pilot environments.

2. PILOT SEASON: During the Writer’s Strike of 2007-2008, Studios adapted and used the void to eliminate pilot season as we know it. Gone are the days of hundreds of pilots. In fact, this year, there are only 67 pilots to have registered for production – of which only about 35 have been green lit for production.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118000479.html?categoryid=3284&cs=1&query=pilots+casting+2009

And this year, due again to a sagging economy, studios and networks believe that by committing named stars to their projects, they will receive more money from this year’s up-fronts from ad agencies. They are banking on star power to leverage better buys at the all important UPFRONTS. So, stars and pop-stars like Richard Dreyfuss, Chevy Chase, Brittany Snow, Elle McPherson, Rebecca Romijn, Ashley Simpson, Scott Caan, Skeet Ulrich, and proven TV talents like Kelsey Grammar, Eric McCormick, John McGinley, Joel McHale, Jenna Elfman, Donald Faison, Maura Tierney, Peter Krauss, Craig T. Nelson, Dax Shepherd, etc…. You do the math, 37 pilots… top stars being sought… BOTTOM LINE: the conflagration of the economy and a lack of roles being cast, means that this pilot season may be even more competitive than the concurrent regular TV market right now. So those of you who have gotten auditions for series regulars… feel great about that!

3. TV: While TV has been steady, again due to the conflagration of film and named actors doing Guest Starring roles, we have seen a horrible trickle down. Many Guest Stars are now doing Co-stars and Co-stars/Developmental Actors (those with less than 5 primetime credits) frankly are not getting seen much. One CD recently told me that she had over 25 women who would be considered ‘working actors’ going for a co-star role. BOTTOM LINE: Again, due to the abundance of name and working actors, many less-developed actors are not even being seen right now.

4. ECONOMIC IMPACT I – THE EROSION OF QUOTES/RATES: There are really three major impacts to actors during this economic crunch. First, we are seeing the erosion of quotes. Due to the availability of so many talented actors, CD’s and Producers are in the driver’s seat in negotiations. When they say, “well we got someone else who will do it for less”, they ain’t kidding. I have spoken to a number of my peers who have confirmed this erosion of pay for their actors. In short, right now, quotes are eroding and for many, the minimum has become the maximum pay.

5. ECONOMIC IMPACT II – THE CONCLUSION OF SAG STALEMATE: Many are hoping that with the end of this stalemate, Hollywood will get back to normal. I have to say, that I am not one who necessarily believes this. First off, due to the economic conditions, most studios have lost their millions of dollars from hedge funds; and European, Asian and Middle Eastern money has dried up. Even Stephen Spielberg has had to beg, borrow and steal to get his company financed …. And it wasn’t anywhere near what he originally asked for. I believe that, even after the SAG stalemate is over, there is probably not enough money for 50 Studio Feature Films to be done right out of the gate. BOTTOM LINE: While this will help us move towards normalcy, it will not be the cash cow some people think it will be. One side note, is that I expect that more formulaic projects will be down out the gate as Studios will be less likely to take significant risks since most of these projects will be financed by both the studio and their investors. In short, you will see more Iron Mans, Animation, and SAWs… they are money in the bank when you factor in ratios, etc.

6. ECONOMIC IMPACT III – OVERALL STATEMENT OF ENVIRONMENT: It is important that everyone follow the economic conditions closely. I know it is easy to be skeptical over the studios, networks, cablers, production houses, show runners, etc, losing money, but it is a cold-hard fact right now. These entities are truly in a difficult spot. If you have read much lately, there have been dramatic cut backs at every studio and network, from firings to asking show runners to cut between 2-7% of their budgets (not to mention the 25+% cutback shows like the Sarah Silverman were asked to swallow recently). Furthermore, these networks and studios are largely owned by conglomerates who have lost in the billions over the last 6 months. When I attended NATPE in January, all the talk was how to get ‘thinner.’ Everything is getting tight. Budgets, Marketing, Staffing, etc., and this will undoubtedly impact the actor. Also, the foreign sales market (where much of the TV and Film money is made, is being hit hard by the erosion of the US Dollar. So these entities are not able to recoup the costs they were in better days by the one-time explosion of the foreign markets. BOTTOM LINE: The economic conditions are forcing the industry to be as ‘thin’ as possible.

7. COMMERCIALS – INDUSTRY AND ECONOMIC IMPACTS: One analyst said last year, that 2008 was the worst commercial market since maybe 1974. I would not argue with this. Think about it: three of the top products/services for ad agencies are banks, cars and other financial services – all of which were struck down in 2008/early 2009 by this recession. This was confirmed when news struck that even the Super Bowl did not sell out advertising this year. The good news is that the advertising industry tends to be one of the first ones to be negatively impacted by a recession, but one of the first to grow as the recession moves to an end as advertisers of products want to start accumulating market share before the turn of the economy. Another impact relates to the overall conditions of the TV/FILM/PILOT situation. Many strong actors have made enough money on TV/FILM, etc so that they have not had to do commercials in years. Due to the last few years and the lack of work, many top actors are now back in the commercial market; thus again, causing a logjam in casting. BOTTOMLINE: The economic slowdown has caused a dramatic decrease in ad sales and the lack of work has caused more actors to re-enter the commercial market.

THE GOOD NEWS!!

Okay, so that is where we are today. You know me, I try to always call it straight as I see it. So, I am not going to sugar-coat this either. I anticipate that 2009 will be a tough year overall for actors (and agencies). First off, the economy will not likely get straightened out until at least the 3rd to 4th quarter of this year and so all the factors above will remain in place through most, if not all, of 2009. Secondly, until the labor situation gets straightened out, we will not be seeing dramatic amount of film production, and this seems to be dragging along as well (as we enter the 8th month of the stalemate – it was announced today that SAG is thinking now about taking AMPTP to court for anti-trust violations). But again, even if it was finalized, there is not enough investor money to see the film production level normalize and increase for most, if not all, of 2009. Also, since movies cost around $40 for two (tickets, popcorn, etc) – this is not a recession proof field anymore. During our last significant recession, there were few choices for guilty pleasures to get away from the stress of our times – so many people flocked to the theatres. NOT SO THESE DAYS, one can go to the web, TV, cable (not around in 1974, 1982, 1988 much), Video Games, Netflix, RedBox (movie for a $1). So studios are probably not in any big rush to make films – as people cannot afford this once cheap diversion – better to divert for a few bucks to all the many other sources of guilty pleasures. OKAY, so that didn’t sound like good news…

The good news is that there are some paradigm shifts occurring that make 2010 -2012 look like it might be one of the most prolific times in Hollywood history. Due to technological developments, there are more platforms being developed than ever. The internet is driving millions of new viewers each year. Zillion is going to transform the way we view advertising. For those who don’t know, it has recently been unveiled by the maker of Real Player and the ‘mouse.’ It is a system that makes you watch ads before downloading movies (they already have 14,000 Titles ready for download), TV, other forms of entertainment to your TV Screen. However, the consumer can choose the products they want to see (let’s say you go retail clothing and watch a Macy’s ad and love the jacket; you can immediately click on the ad/jacket and go directly to their website where you can buy it). Also, you earn points by watching the commercials that you can use towards purchases. Furthermore, SONY and others are now selling TVs that wirelessly connect to your computer, so you can download TV/FILMS at anytime from your computer (websites like Hula, Netflix, etc) directly to your TV. In short, technology is making more platforms which will require more content than ever. Also, Cablers are all embracing doing scripted shows, some have up to 5 shows this year… again, more content is needed and thus MORE ACTORS!

BOTTOM LINE: More platforms = more content = more actors! So as long as SAG/AFTRA can protect your rates and jurisdictional issues, there will be more good compensated work than ever in Hollywood by 2010-2012.

Drop Dead Diva – Background Talent

NEW LIFETIME TELEVISION SERIES

“DROP DEAD DIVA”

SEEKING BACKGROUND TALENT

Atlanta, GA – April 7, 2009 — Emmy Award winning casting company Fincannon & Associates announced today that they are on a search for background talent for the upcoming series from Sony Pictures Television “Drop Dead Diva,” while being filmed in and around Peachtree City, GA.

“We are looking for background extras of all ages and ethnicities to kick start our new series,” said Mark Fincannon. “We have secured a recurring location in Decatur — so it would be great to hire local area residents.”

When beautiful-but-vapid model wannabe Deb (Brooke D’Orsay) has a fatal car accident, she suddenly finds herself in front of Heaven’s gatekeeper, Fred (Ben Feldman), who declares her a self-centered “zero.”  Outraged, she attempts to persuade Fred to return her to her shallow existence but is accidentally relegated to the body of the recently deceased Jane Bingum (Brooke Elliott).  A brilliant, thoughtful and plus-size attorney with a loyal assistant (Margaret Cho), Jane has always lived in the shadow of her more comely colleagues whereas Deb has always relied on her external beauty.  Now, by a twist of fate and a bolt of divine intervention, both personalities must learn to coexist in Jane’s plus-size frame in the ultimate showdown between brains and beauty.

Drop Dead Diva is produced by Sony Pictures Television for Lifetime Television. Josh Berman (Bones, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation) is creator and executive producer.  Alex Taub (Eli Stone) joins Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Academy Award®-winning Chicago, Hairspray, Lifetime’s Living Proof) of Storyline Entertainment as executive producers.

The open call will be held, Saturday, April 18th, 2009 & Sunday, April 19th, 2009 from 10:00am to 6:00pm in the North Dekalb Mall located at 2050 Lawrenceville Hwy, Decatur, GA 30033. We will be in the Macy’s Wing, across from Ross: Dress For Less.  No experience necessary.

If you are interested in being a background extra for this new series, please bring a recent Polaroid-sized photo of yourself

Testimonial

This class was such an incredible blessing to attend. Personally, Brad is exactly the person I’ve needed to meet. He answered so many questions, and took much of the mystery out of it. He has knowledge born of so many years in this business; yet the personal humility to share openly and honestly.  He’s giving back. I felt extremely comfortable sharing some things with him I’ve not shared with anyone else. It was so much more than I expected.

Creative Studios of Atlanta is excited to open another class of Meisner for Film to Atlanta actors.  The first section is completely filled with a waiting list.  The new section starts TONIGHT, and there are only a few spots left.

What is Meisner you ask?

Sanford Meisner is one of the Master Acting Teachers of all time.  He developed his technique after working with the Group Theatre at New York City’s Neighborhood Playhouse and continued its refinement for fifty years. He is regarded as one of the Master Acting teachers in the world along with Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Bobby Lewis.

Meisner Training is an interdependent series of exercises that build upon one another. The more complex work supports a command of dramatic text.  Meisner students work on a series of progressively complex exercises that emphasizes “moment-to-moment” spontaneity.
The principles of “listen and respond” and “stay in the moment” are fundamental to the work.

Some people who have studied with Meisner include:
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Tom Cruise
David Mamet
Sandra Bullock
Robert Duvall
Diane Keaton
James Gandolfini
Joanne Woodward
Kim Basinger
Anjelica Huston
and many more.
