a few slots left in VO workshop

Hi – They are limiting class size to 16 people so there will be lots of time for each person to really get some work in. There will be homework and Tony will record each person the second day. It’s really an amazing price for the amount of hours the workshop is for both days.

Because he’s a casting director who works on animation projects all year round, not only is it voice over training, but exposure to a casting director who has lots of opportunities!

A few spots left in the older groups, several spots in the kids session.

Casting Director conducts 2 day workshop

Hollywood voice-over casting director Tony Gonzales will be conducting a 2 day voice-over workshop on Sat March 21 and Sun March 22.

Taking continuing training is important in every actor’s career. However, when an actor has a chance to take training from a casting director, it creates double benefits.

Not only is the actor receiving valuable training, they are receiving exposure from the very people they will audition for in the future.

I have seen casting directors take interest in people from their workshops,” says Actor’s Scene owner Nicolle Campbell. “And then that casting director calls those people in on auditions later. It’s a great way to build your contacts and be seen! Moreover, the casting director gets to know you and your personality better in a workshop setting. It’s very advantagous to the actor.”

This workshop is unique as it’s a 2 day workshop. Tony will go over technique of voice-over, how to audition and work with students on their voices on the first day. He will then hand out scripts for students to take home to work on. The second day, students will be recorded and critiqued.

“The other great thing about this workshop is it’s only $200 for 2 days! Most 2 day workshops with a casting director are upwards of $400!” says Campbell.

Tony Gonzales is a freelance voice-over director and casting associate with ties to major voiceover agencies in Hollywood. His experience in the casting process has given him an ear for what casting directors are looking for and what stands out! His consulting and coaching expertise is sought out by talent nation wide.

Tony has worked on American Dragon: Jake Long, Dave the Barbarian, The Buzz on Maggie, Brandy & Mr Whiskers, Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce GO, Nick Jr’s –Olivia, And recently cast and directed Disney Channel Games online, Kabillion.com, and is currently finishing work on three new cartoon shows.

Formerly of Walt Disney Animation Casting, Tony also works on casting independent projects throughout Hollywood.

Testimonial

This class was such an incredible blessing to attend. Personally, Brad is exactly the person I’ve needed to meet. He answered so many questions, and took much of the mystery out of it. He has knowledge born of so many years in this business; yet the personal humility to share openly and honestly.  He’s giving back. I felt extremely comfortable sharing some things with him I’ve not shared with anyone else. It was so much more than I expected.

from dave ramsey’s newsletter – how to budget an irregular income

How to Budget an Irregular Income

If you’re among the many Americans who are self-employed or working on commission, your somewhat unpredictable income makes it tough to create a budget. But that doesn’t mean you don’t need one! No matter how you get paid, you’ve still got to stick to a plan so your irregular income doesn’t get out of control. Even if you don’t know how to budget, we’ll show you how. You can’t use that excuse anymore!

First, start with the Monthly Cash Flow Plan budget form. This step helps you figure out precisely how much money you need each month in order to cover your four walls (food, clothing, shelter and transportation). Once you understand that budget form, you can move on to the next one, the Irregular Income Planning form.

In order to fill out the Irregular Income Planning budget form, take a look at your first budget. List each item according to its importance. The most important item on that plan should be your first item on your Irregular Income Planning form. Pay that item. The second most important item should be listed second on the form. Continue the list in this way, ordering from most important to least important.

When filling out the form, remember that how much you need for the item goes into the “amount” column, and the running total (starting from top to bottom) goes into the “cumulative amount” column. For example, let’s say that food is on the first line, and you need $250 a month to feed your family. The amount you need to pay, $250, would go in both the “amount” and “cumulative amount” columns. The second line has gas with $150 per month, which means that $150 would be listed in the “amount” column. The total of those two columns, $400 ($250 + $150), would be listed in the “cumulative amount” column.

Continue to create your Irregular Income Planning form in this way until every spending category is listed on your budget. From this point on, when you receive a paycheck, take the amount and spread it out to the items on your budget, starting at the top and working down. Your check may not cover everything that is listed. That’s okay. Use it to pay as much as you can. Then, when your next check comes in, pick up where the last check left off.

Sure it may be a little bit tedious and unpredictable at first, but implementing a budget into your everyday life will help you control your spending, live with a plan, and build wealth so you’re not worrying about having enough money to cover your four walls. Take Jamie’s word for it:

We composed a new Dave Ramsey-approved budget and started using cash more often instead of the debit card. We quickly learned how to tighten the spending strings! Even though we are only on Baby Step 2, we are just thrilled that we have one less bill to worry about. Now that we have a precise budget, we feel a new sense of empowerment in knowing how much money we have, what we are going to do with it, and what we need to save. It’s nice having a little extra left over each month to apply to our debt.

CHICAGO NAMED BEST CITY FOR INDIE FILMMAKERS

on March 6, 2009 8:30 AM
If you’re an independent filmmaker (or just unemployed and want to become one), MovieMaker magazine put together its annual list of the top cities to host indie filmmakers and
productions. Last year’s No. 1, Austin, got bumped to No. 10 in favor of Chicago, which was certainly the most visible location last year since The Dark Knightlargely called it home.
The list goes on to include the obvious (New York, Miami) and the less familiar (Boise, Wichita and Bozeman, Mt.). Paste‘s stomping ground, Atlanta, came in at No. 2.
By its own admission, the list reformed this year to include 25 cities (up from 10) and a conscious effort to consider “those places that offer the perfect combination of employment opportunities, reasonable costs of living, strong quality of life, affordable home prices and, of course, financial incentives,” not a surprise given frantic economic times. The 25 cities:

1. Chicago, Ill.
2. Atlanta, Ga.
3. New York, N.Y.
4. Shreveport, La.
5. Albuquerque, N.M.
6. Boston, Mass.
7. Stamford, Conn.
8. Memphis, Tenn.
9. Milwaukee, Wis.
10. Austin, Tex.
11. Detroit, Mich.
12. Miami, Fla.
13. Seattle, Wa.
14. Portland, Ore.
15. Philadelphia, Pa.
16. Sedona, AZ
17. Salt Lake City, Utah
18. Wilmington, N.C.
19. Boise, Idaho
20. Denver, Colo.
21. Bozeman, Mont.
22. Wichita, Kan.
23. San Diego, Calif.
24. Richmond, Va.
25. Des Moines, Iowa

Tyler Perry shooting next film later this month

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Hot on the heels of the success of “Madea Goes to Jail,” the top movie in North America for the past two weekends, prolific filmmaker Tyler Perry is about to begin work on his next project.

I Can Do Bad All By Myself,” based on Perry’s play of the same name, will start shooting on March 16 at his studio in Atlanta. As usual, Perry will write, direct and star in the film. Taraji P. Henson, Oscar nominated for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” will also star.
Perry’s signature character, the indomitable pistol-packing granny Madea, will be featured in the film, which is scheduled for release on September 11 viaLionsgate, the studio with which he signed a three-year, first-look deal in the summer.
Perry will then start work on “Why Did I Get Married Too,” a sequel to 2007′s “Why Did I Get Married?” It will be released on Easter weekend next April. Perry has already demonstrated an affinity for Easter holiday openings since his “Meet the Browns” opened in that slot last year to $20 million. “Madea Goes to Jail” set a record for Perry with a $41 million opening, and has grossed $66 million to date.
Perry has released seven films through Lionsgate since “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” in 2005, and they have collectively grossed nearly $350 million at the North American box office.

Today is Verda’s last day

This email went out on Wednesday, March 4 but just in case it didn’t get to everyone, posting here as well…

I read a blog recently titled “The Recession Hits Home”, and today I’m reminded of that post as our Houghton staff is affected by the downturn in the economy.  Verda has decided to seek other employment because as we have less commercial/industrial work (both are down across the market/across the industry), there’s less that we need her assistance with.  Although we agree that it is the best choice given the slowdown, it’s hard to see her go because she’s such a loyal and true employee and a great woman of character.

It’s our sincere hope that this will be a transition rather than a goodbye because one of the best parts of this job is the talent –the people we meet here and have the privilege of working with become cherished and lifelong friends.  Verda is no exception to this rule and her desire is to stay plugged in with extra work, coordinating, production, etc…so you will hopefully still get to see her around.

Please feel free to reach out to her before she goes.  It has been such a pleasure to come to know and love this darling lady, we want her to know she’s loved and appreciated.  She’s here today, Wednesday, is off tomorrow and then Friday, March 6th will be her last day, leaving around 4p.

I know that she will miss you guys most of all –

Thanks and best,

Mystie

What is Meisner? – Creative Studios of Atlanta

Creative Studios of Atlanta is excited to open another class of Meisner for Film to Atlanta actors.  The first section is completely filled with a waiting list.  The new section starts TONIGHT, and there are only a few spots left.

What is Meisner you ask?

Sanford Meisner is one of the Master Acting Teachers of all time.  He developed his technique after working with the Group Theatre at New York City’s Neighborhood Playhouse and continued its refinement for fifty years. He is regarded as one of the Master Acting teachers in the world along with Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Bobby Lewis.

Meisner Training is an interdependent series of exercises that build upon one another. The more complex work supports a command of dramatic text.  Meisner students work on a series of progressively complex exercises that emphasizes “moment-to-moment” spontaneity.
The principles of “listen and respond” and “stay in the moment” are fundamental to the work.

Some people who have studied with Meisner include:
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Tom Cruise
David Mamet
Sandra Bullock
Robert Duvall
Diane Keaton
James Gandolfini
Joanne Woodward
Kim Basinger
Anjelica Huston
and many more.

About the Instructor:
Creative Studios of Atlanta is proud to have Vince Pisani teaching Meisner for film.  Vince is a working actor who has worked in over 50 productions on stage and film. Vince also runs casting sessions at one of Atlanta’s top talent agencies. His insight into acting and auditioning help students to grow stronger, especially in moment-to-moment work.

Space is limited.  Wait list for Monday class.  Thursday class begins tonight.  3 spaces left.  $99/month.
