Invasion Christmas Carol @ Dad’s Garage

Invasion Christmas Carol @ Dad's Garage

Invasion Christmas Carol @ Dad

Invasion: Christmas Carol
Concept by The Dad’s Garage Improv Ensemble

Directed by Dan Triandiflou

In true Dad’s Garage tradition, here comes another alternative holiday production that you can’t see anywhere else! This year the award-winning Dad’s Garage Improv Ensemble will be skewering the quintessential Christmas play Charles Dickens’s – A Christmas Carol.

In this improvised full-length play, you’ll see your favorite Dickensian characters acting in ways that might not be so familiar as our seasoned improvisers create a whole new holiday experience before your very eyes. A different show every evening, the ghost of Ebenezer Scrooge’s past will be played by a different ‘invader’ (unknown to the cast) each night. Be it a visit from an astronaut, Julio Iglesias, or Mr. T – it’s up to the cast to roll with whatever surprises they’re dealt with. And, to add to the fun, the ghost of Christmas present will be played by an audience member plucked straight from the seats during the show. It could be you! So, join us for a new Holiday tradition that will have you laughing so hard it washes all of the ‘Bah Humbugs’ away.

Watch the trailer for Invasion: Christmas Carol on YouTube. Please note, it contains profanity and therefore might not be appropriate to watch in certain environments.

Vouchers and Payments

When you work a job, ANY job, please make sure to take a voucher with you and get it filled out.  This is your acting “time card” and what we use to verify your hours and make sure you get paid.  All vouchers should be filled in carefully and clearly so we can make sense of them.  Each one has three pieces that are carbon copies, one goes to production, one you keep for your records, and one is returned to us.  This needs to be done WITHIN 24 HOURS of the date you worked.

We’ve had a few issues with payment lately that would have been easily cleared up if the voucher’s were handled correctly.  We have been unable to invoice clients and/or unable to issue checks to you, the talent, because vouchers weren’t turned in, were turned in late or wrong, or were filled in incorrectly.  In economic times such as these I know everyone wants to get paid as soon as possible so make sure you do your part!

Also, if you have billing inquiries please direct them to htpayments@gmail.com.  Once an agent finishes the paperwork on a job and turns it in to billing they are not in charge of receiving that payment from the client, which is why they usually cannot immediately answer your questions when you call asking about them.  However emailing htpayments@gmail.com will go immediately to Gail and our book keeper Maynita and ALL inquiries will be read and dealt with, so if you have an issue please use this email address.  Phone inquiries about billing should be directed to extension 206.

Thanks,

Gail Houghton

Casting for FSU Graduate Thesis Films

The FSU film school is having auditions here in Atlanta December 4th and 5th at the Alliance theatre for their graduate student thesis films. All films are non-paying but they will handle all travel and hotel accommodations as well as supply you with the film for the reel. I’ve attached the announcement to this posting and I’ve quoted more info below. Please contact the client directly:

There are 17, 10-15 minute short films that we are looking to cast for so this is a large opportunity for actors to build up their reel and showcase their talents. The films will be shot in Tallahassee as well as surrounding areas. I’ve attached our flier for the auditions, that will be held on Dec. 4-5, from 9-5, at the Alliance Theatre. Attached you will find 2 versions of the breakdowns for all of the shows; one of them is a list of all of them compiled together, the other is them on individual pages should you prefer to print it out that way. On these you will find the shooting dates for each of the shows.

We are requesting that emails regarding scheduling an audition are sent to: fsuthesiscasting@gmail.com by December 2nd.  Like I said on the phone when the actors come in for the audition they can choose the sides for the movie they’re interested in reading for however later on they will be considered for all the films. The breakdowns are also available on breakdownexpress if any of the actors would like to check them out there. Also, the school will cover travel and lodging expenses for actors if they are cast however these are nonpaying roles seeing as they are student films. Let me know if you need any more info from me.  Thanks,

Recent Casting Note

Please spread the word about this.  We want to make sure our talent are the BEST and the MOST PREPARED when they go out and these notes are very important in ensuring that happens.  It’s not often we get notes from clients so when we do we want to make sure everyone reads them.

———–

We’re asking clients for feedback on our talent and auditions and this is one I recently received:

It has been my experience that when the talent comes in to audition, 9 times out of 10 they are not prepared, when asked when they received there sides, the normal response would be I just got it.  I know this to not be true, since some of the other actors came prepared.  Many people think they can just wing it, which is not the case.  It is very important if the actors are going to come in and audition that they take their craft seriously, holding the sides while auditioning with just a little bit of dialogue is a NO NO.  Also many of the actors (when I say many I am not just speaking of Houghton Talent) only look at their lines and not the entire side which depicts the scene they are auditioning for.  If they were to take the time and look at everything and not try and rush through everything it would help them out.  Another point would be for them to dress the part of the character.  We take pride in making every audition a wonderful experience for the actors, which does not mean they have the right to come unprepared or even late at times or not show up for that matter.  Acting is a passion, not something we wake and decide to do for the day.  It is a disservice for those who truly wish to act and have no way of getting an audiiton.

While we don’t like hearing this it’s important that everyone take what is said above and use it to grow.  It is UNACCEPTABLE to show up to an audition unprepared, especially when you have only a few lines to memorize.  Always show up on time and prepared for auditions, because as you can see above it does not go unnoticed when you do.  This is not the first time we’ve heard this from a client.

As for dressing the part this is a preference that can change for different casting directors.  While it is ok to dress the part at any time please refrain from using elaborate wardrobe or props.

Follow-up to being prepared for auditions

The quote from the casting director posted earlier could literally be from every single casting director in the Southeast. I’m sure they all face the same problems with actors. I know I’ve been paired with actors who are unprepared (and it’s infuriating), or simply overheard them in the waiting room confessing to not preparing. So here’s some more reality checks:

1) Get a cell phone that allows you to check e-mail. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for not checking e-mail everyday. Unless you are booked out for certain dates, and will be out of the country, there’s no reason to be unavailable. As we all know, the digital age has allowed clients to give shorter and shorter notice for auditions, so if you’re serious about this industry, you better get an e-mail enabled phone (I recommend the iPhone :)

2) For 30sec or 60sec commercials, memorize the script. Chances are you have under 10 sentences to commit to memory. If there’s a lot more, still attempt to memorize it, especially if you have the luxury of more than 24 hours.

3) Never blame it on the agent. If you show up to Stillwell, and Melissa asks if you got the script, and you say “no”, or “my agent didn’t send it til an hour ago”, you don’t think that will get back to Houghton? So not only are you coming across as unprepared, but you’re also damaging your relationship with Houghton.

4) Just because Houghton sends you to read Person #1, don’t be surprised if the casting associate makes you read Person #2. Don’t be adversarial and say “But my agent told me to prepare #1″, just do what they say.

5) Halloween only comes once a year. That’s the day you can wear whatever costume you want. Auditions, however, are not the place to get overly dressed up (unless instructed). Don’t mistake a hospital commercial as a chance to stop by Party City and buy a white coat and stethoscope. The safe answer to “should I dress the part?” is that you should dress towards the character with clothes you would normally wear in public. Auditioning for Army Wives as a soldier? Wear a green t-shirt, not full battle gear. It’s a judgment call, but just don’t go overboard.

Event’s at Ken’s Creative Studios

I wanted to let you know about a series of special events happening at the studio this weekend that I thought you’d be interested in. We are hosting two internationally acclaimed award winning directors from Israel who will be sharing their experience with us pertaining to director/actor collaboration, international filmmkaking, film festivals, sales, and distribution.
This amazing filmmaking duo is in the midst of international rise.
Guy and Erez have achieved the following:
1. They co-directed 7 short films which have won over 40 international awards.
2. They graduated from the Fox Studio Directors Lab in Hollywood.
3. Their current film and first feature, STRANGERS, which is based on one of their shorts is hitting the international market right now after winning the Grand Jury Prize for Best Drama at the Sundance film festival.

Currently Erez is in the post production stage of a film he just directed and Guy is now in prep for a feature he will direct in January.

The real-life experiences these two men have to share are compelling, fascinating and educating examples of what it takes to make it. They are here this weekend only, and they will share their story, secrets and insights on how to make, market and sell films in the international market place with limited amounts of money.

Director/Actor collaborations – tonight (Friday, November 14, 2008).
This evening Guy and Erez will screen some of their shorts; including the one that won the Audience Award for best short at the Sundance Film Festival, after which they will share and demonstrate their technique for working with actors. Some of the actors in attendance will get to work with them. ($50).
The rest of the weekend they will host a series of short workshops.

On Saturday morning, they will talk about what it takes to make a good short film and why you should make a short film from 10am-1pm ($75),

Saturday afternoon, they will discuss how to market, promote and sell your short film once it is made from 2-5pm. ($75) (They have distribution for their short films all over the world.)
On Sunday they will share how to turn your short film into a feature film from 10am-1pm.($75)
If you want to attending all four workshops we will discount the price to $200 (attend three, get the fourth free).

This is a rare and valuable opportunity.

I encourage you to attend one or all 4 of these “once in a lifetime” workshops from this amazing duo of international directors who are available this weekend only to answer your questions and share their insights, knowledge and experiences with you in an intimate setting.
Reservations suggested but not required. To reserve your seat call 404-355-4588.

Sincerely,
Kenneth Feinberg

“Serving and promoting Performing Arts in greater Atlanta”

Dear Performing Arts Community,

Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts (ACPA) is extremely pleased to announce a new partnership with Kaiser Permanente to provide an affordable health care plan to eligible ACPA members.  Access to health insurance has long been among the top items on the memberships’ wish list for ACPA services, and modest steps toward fulfilling that wish have been taken.  Now, ACPA has been enabled to take a giant leap forward.

The Kaiser Permanente Bridge Program is uniquely designed to help those who are uninsured, income-eligible obtain health care coverage for a low monthly charge for up to 24 months. Eligible individuals pay a fraction of the premium cost and Kaiser Permanente subsidizes the rest.  Coverage includes preventive services, hospitalization, comprehensive pharmacy and more.

ACPA still has plenty of slots open for eligible ACPA members to enroll in the Kaiser Permanente Bridge Program. Enrollment is by appointment at our office in downtown, Atlanta. For questions, or to set up an appointment to enroll in the Kaiser Permanente Bridge Program, please call Jessyca Holland at 404-588-9890 or email Jessyca@atlantaperforms.com.  For information about eligibility, visit: http://www.atlantaperforms.biz/home/acpa-resources/Bridge-Health-Insurance.html

Our great staff will be ready to help start off an exciting new year!

Your checks will still hold your place for the new dates so as not to get caught in holiday mail.
